‘HEAD’ Lines

I don’t like Friday’s

Dear Parents/Carers

Those of us of a certain age will remember the 1979 song by the Boomtown Rats – “I don’t like Monday’s”.

It seems that with our current group of teenagers you could replace the ‘Monday’ with a ‘Friday’.

Attendance at school is the single most important factor when it comes to students achieving to the best of their ability. However, our analysis has shown that attendance on a Friday is 1 or 2 percent lower than any other day of the week, and for some students there is a pattern of missing school on a Friday.

To put this in to perspective, there have been 4 Friday’s so far, this academic year, when all students should have been in school. If a student has missed 2 Friday’s, but has been present every other day, their attendance would be 90%.

If we look at the examination performance of John Hanson students with attendance above 90% compared with those whose attendance is below 90% it is stark.
Only 38% of students with attendance below 90% achieved at least a grade 4 in English and Maths. For students with attendance above 90%, this figure was 82%.

On average, students with attendance above 90% achieved 2 grades better in every subject they study.

If your child is not at school, they will not be learning and they are highly unlikely to achieve to the best of their ability.

Please support your child to make sure they are at school every day, including Friday’s.

Enjoy the weekend with your children.

PSHE day 1: 30th September

Our first PSHE day of the year, and what a busy one!

Year 7: Welcoming our year 7s with some vital sessions for life both in and out of school
Tutor session on Marriage:
The first session of the day for year 7 was all about the importance of stable relationships. Interesting discussions were had regarding marriage and civil partnerships and debunking ideas around this topic (no it is not a good idea to marry for the party nor do you have to get married if you don’t want to!)

Organisation skills: We all have amazing brains, it is our mindset that affects how “good” we are - our perception of ourselves as learners also affects our progress and, in this session, students learnt about parts of the brain, memory skills and problem-solving skills.

CPR:  The Year 7s had one of the most important lessons they will have at John Hanson as they looked at what to do with an injured casualty. They practiced how to put somebody into the recovery position, how to perform CPR and discussed how to use a defibrillator.

Healthy Lifestyle: The Y7’s explored the benefits of, and risks of not leading a healthy lifestyle and how to make new changes to their diet and sleep patterns to make them healthier.

Dare to Be: A session based on the ‘Dare to be You’ transition book by Matthew Syed where they considered their own identity and how to be brave enough to say no to Kid Doubt when those difficult thoughts raise their heads!

Friendship: The work on understanding positive relationships continued with the session on friendship. What do you look for in a friendship? What makes a good friend? What makes a bad friend? How does bullying fit in with this? This session ended with the lovely friendship postcard activity which saw students writing an appreciation postcard that will be delivered to their friend later in the week.

Year 8: A day of topical and sometimes hard-hitting subjects, exploring how we can take care of ourselves and others
Extended tutor session on Black History: To begin their day, year 8 started their discussions on Black British history and then importance of the recognition of how the UK is influenced by the African Diaspora for multiple reasons. Similarly, students focussed on inclusivity and diversity in their speech and language through the discussion on appropriateness of words. Students enthusiastically developed their understanding of how to communicate with others who do not get things right and what to do if that should become apparent.

Anti-Bullying: In this session, Year 8 learnt about the harmful impact that our language can have on others, in 'real life' and online, and how to recognise prejudicial or hateful language. They were asked to consider their own behaviour towards others, and how they can avoid engaging in upsetting or unkind behaviour in the future.
Immigration: What is the truth around immigration? What stereotypes might we be aware of and what do we do about them? Reasons for immigration were explored and common myths debunked in this session, using real life accounts and contemporary data.

Peer Pressure: Using our drama skills we will look at the effects of peer pressure, the different types of peer pressure and how we can avoid getting ourselves involved in those situations.

Bereavement session with Simon Says: This emotional and challenging session focused on the reality of grief when someone you love dies and explored the support available via the charity ‘Simon Says.’ The session focused in on what we can do to support friends who are bereaved and practical tips to help ourselves when we lose a loved one and the shocking statistic that 1 in 22 young people will lose a parent before they turn 18. Students discussed the feelings and emotions that they or someone might feel if they lost someone and how they can deal with these emotions. Students were fully engaged in this hard-hitting topic.

Team Building: Team work makes the dream work in this active session! Year 8's focus today was to work collaboratively in teams within their tutor groups. They needed to solve the riddles first and the answer took them to find parts of a puzzle around the school. The students had to use different skills such as problem solving, communication and literacy to ensure they successfully completed the task. These skills are transferable across subjects and key to a successful team.

Growing up: keeping fit and healthy: This ‘Growing up session’ focuses on the importance of teenager personal hygiene, where to access hygiene products at school and the importance of exercise to teen health. The session ends with a stomp around the field with the lovely Milo (the John Hanson therapy dog).

Year 9: A collection of thought-provoking and challenging topics, encouraging our students to think about mature and important matters
Tutor session on the Cost of Living:  In our current climate, we felt this new session was of utmost importance as students will be going into the world that is rapidly changing and becoming more difficult to financially manage. Students learnt the importance of budgeting and being fiscally aware to support with these difficult times.

Choices: This challenging session looked at understanding the options available if pregnant and students were given the opportunity to discuss these options in a safe and respectful way. Adoption, termination and keeping the baby are all looked into, as well as reminders given on safe sex and the laws around the age of consent.

Sexual Consent: You’ve made someone a cup of tea because they wanted one but they have since fallen asleep – do you make them drink the tea even though they clearly don’t want it? What if they change their mind midway through drinking the tea – do they have to keep drinking when they don’t want to? This session brilliantly explores the idea of consent using the tea analogy as well as the law around consent and sexual assault. As well as watching some videos produced by law enforcement they will be looking at some scenarios to work out whether consent can be given and the consequences of actions.

Teenage Pregnancy: Honest, candid experiences are shared in this session (via pre-recorded video) on what it’s like to be a teenage parent. Through these shared experiences, students are asked to consider the responsibility of having a child and learn about the support out there.

Contraception: What are the different types of contraception? How do you choose what to use? Who decides? What is the age of consent and why is it important? All of these questions and more are answered in this session as students learn about contraceptive choices.

Beliefs: True or false…you can do a pregnancy test on the first day of your missed period? You can’t get pregnant the first time you have sex? These and other myths are ‘busted’ in this important session that explores common misconceptions around pregnancy and ensures that students are aware of the facts.

Cost of a Baby: Did you know that the average UK salary is £31,000 and in 2021, the average cost of raising a baby for 18 years is £181,000?! This session explored the cost of having a child as a teenager and the charities that are available to support should this become a reality. We will look at the specific items babies need from new-born to toddler age and understand that the cost is high, especially for unplanned, teen pregnancies.

Year 10: A range of challenging issues and themes to promote safety, maturity and wellbeing

Alcoholism with the AA: This session was delivered by two former alcoholics, they discussed their life experiences and how alcohol and drugs has had a negative impact on their lives. This was a humble and engaging session clearing up misconceptions people have about the AA, sharing personal stories and discussing the impact alcohol and drugs can have. The session was informative and detailed supportive measures students could take if they ever need it.

Sexuality: A session that allows students to understand what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like and some terminology used by LGBTQ+ groups to support understanding and communication.

Cultural Health: Students have been learning about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the practice of breast Ironing. Students have covered key regions of the world where the practices are prevalent, covering ways to report concerns.

Tolerance: Anti-racism: During todays PSHE session our focus for the lesson was on tolerance and anti-racism. As a group we discussed some key British values; Democracy, the rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect and Acceptance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
We then talked about the importance of respect for others regardless of skin colour, nationality, religion and culture. Our overarching theme was equality and diversity and embracing one another’s difference’s.

Violent Consequences: As the title suggests this session was hard-hitting but the qsworkshops (qsw) representing the charity ‘Stand Against Violence’ was factual and considered in his delivery. The tragedy at the heart of the charity’s work - the devastating murder of 17 year old Lloyd Fouracre in 2005- was sobering to all who watched. Lloyd’s older brother created the charity after his brother’s death. The message about violent behaviour amongst teenagers and the devastating consequences was crucial to hear.

Contraception: This session dealt with an important topic – what contraception is there and what are the consequences of early sexual activity? Students will be learning about the importance of contraception and discussing the different methods. They will have the opportunity to discuss the implications of not using contraception and consider the pros and cons of each main method.

Stacey Dooley Work Experience: In the Year 10 Work Experience session, students will watch an insightful documentary about the range of opportunities available to them. They will find out about some of the challenges and perks of working in different sectors.

Year 11: A day filled with exciting and informative sessions centred around preparing for their futures after John Hanson
Tutor session on student finance: To start things off on PSHE Day 1, year 11 had a tutor session on Student Finance. We began by ensuring students understood what Student Finance is, what is available to them and how, and the options connected to it as a whole. From there we looked at tuition fees in comparison to the potential loans, budgeting, and how income generally works during higher educational journeys. Students discussed how to effectively budget, including conversations about the benefits of saving.

Careers Fair: Over 30 local post-16, post-18, apprenticeship and traineeship providers joined local and national companies, alongside our own Year 11s, and year 11 students from all of our neighbouring Secondary Schools to learn about the options open to them next year.

Careers talk with Mae Pan from Bubble Tea: Students came away from Mae’s talk motivated to really excel in their futures.  They were given inspirational messages to work hard and recognise that they may have several careers before they settle on the role that is truly right for them.

Intro to Apprenticeships and traineeships with Ask Apprenticeships: Students received an informative introduction to Apprenticeships talk from Monica at Ask Apprenticeships. Monica outlined the different apprenticeship opportunities available to students within the surrounding area. Students then completed an interactive task where they have to sign up to Find an Apprenticeship and navigated the website looking for apprenticeships in their chosen career.

CV writing: An opportunity for all year 11s to draft a CV that they can use for future part time jobs or later in their careers.  They thought about their own key skills and achievements, as well as well as their interests and hobbies to create their own brand.

Technologies in the workplace: Year 11 will be looking at the various technologies used in the workplace to assess job applicants and the best way to approach video interviews.

Do you have a little one at home in nappies?

Hampshire County Council are pleased to launch a new scheme providing Hampshire residents with 15% off reusable nappies. It is estimated that each child will go through as many as 4,000 nappies by age two and a half. That’s 920 kilograms per child – as heavy as two grand pianos! As a result, disposable nappies make up around 6% of the average rubbish bin in Hampshire homes. By switching to reusables, you can make a big impact and reduce how much waste you throw away.

Hampshire County Council recognises that the initial cost of reusables can be a barrier for some families, which is why we have partnered with six retailers, providing ample choice of products to suit your needs at a discounted price.

What you need to do:

1. Visit https://www.hants.gov.uk/reusable-nappies

2. Input your postcode

3. Select your address

4. Retrieve your discount code (don't forget to make a note of your expiry date)

5. Spend with your supplier of choice
