River Guardians Programme
October 2022

Dear <<First Name>>,

It's all systems GO for the new ERT Tree Nursery!

ERT have been awarded funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the first (development) year of a new Access to Eden project. This massively exciting initiative will open new doors to engagement with the river for everyone and includes funding for setting up a small tree nursery on an allotment site in Penrith. We will use this to grow trees to plant out on river conservation sites and also to act as an accessible hub for community engagement and awareness of the river Eden.

So far, we've just been clearing and cleaning. We've uncovered the old shed and a couple of trees already in residence, constructed a compost do-nut and started the first level of a log pile for wildlife habitat. Now we need to start talking trees . .

There's lots to do to get the nursery up and running to grow up a supply of native species. There's the growing side - collecting and planting seeds from established trees, taking cuttings and layering to help build up numbers, potting up and eventually planting out. Alongside that we need to sort out raised beds, potting benches, water collection, trackways through the nursery and, of course, a suitable space for occasional tree breaks.

One way or another there really should be something for everyone to join in with, whether you have 5 minutes or 5 hours to contribute. It's very much a case of the more the merrier, so please book yourself in for a tree nursery session or two, or just pop down to No 99 Brackenber allotments on Gilwilly Estate, Penrith to see for yourself how we're getting on.

Hope to see you soon
Cheers, Jenni
