President's Message

September ushers in a season of new beginnings and your Board is well into our work for the 2022-2024 biennium. Thank you for the confidence you have placed in us. It has been a very busy month as we assume our responsibilities. We intend to work with members to generate meaningful action toward reconciliation, revitalization, and renewal within CFUW over the next two years.  The incoming Board has already had two orientation sessions and during our October 6, 2022 Board meeting will ratify membership of standing committees.

As clubs meet and plan for activities this year, I encourage you to consider how to work with other clubs to expand your fellowship and amplify your advocacy efforts.  Also, please plan to participate in town halls and dialogue sessions regarding a number of important issues, such as CFUW’s visual identity and potential renaming.

I am so impressed with the variety of activity clubs across the country are engaged in, and the many ways in which CFUW members make a positive difference in their communities and internationally. As an organization with over six thousand five hundred members, we have a tremendous capacity for influence.  My vision for CFUW is that in our second century of influence and impact, we engage a new generation of CFUW members and focus our energies and influence on both short-term and long-term strategic goals. I believe that there is truly power in women working together.

Stay safe and let’s enjoy a wonderful fall as we are finally able to gather together.

Joy Hurst
President, CFUW
Resolutions for the next Policy Session
On September 22nd a Resolutions Workshop was hosted by National Office to start the preparation for the next round of Resolutions. The Club Proposers of the Resolutions brought to the August 28, 2022 Policy Session engaged in conversation about the Resolutions process with the Club representatives in attendance. Those proposers are congratulated on developing strong Resolutions and integrating so many of the Club-proposed amendments into their Resolved Clauses, as are the Clubs who studied the Resolutions and, in many cases submitted amendments intended to improve the Resolutions. All Resolutions passed at the Policy Session without further amendment and without any person speaking against either Resolution.

It is time to work on Resolutions for 2023! The first step in that process is to find an issue that you can develop into a Resolution which in turn may become CFUW policy.
Once you have found an issue, the following excerpt from the draft document Resolutions Information and Guidelines should be helpful. Please note that the complete document will be circulated following the CFUW Board meeting on October 5.

Intent Development

Potential Proposers should check the CFUW Policy Book at www.cfuwadmin.org to determine whether CFUW has (a) policy focusing on the issue, (b) policy requiring an update, or (c) no policy on the subject.  Potential policy updates should be discussed with the CFUW Advocacy Coordinator or CFUW Resolutions Chair.

If no CFUW policy exists, consider the following points with respect to your issue as you develop the Intent and then prepare the full Resolution.
  • Is this a local, provincial, territorial, national and/or international issue?  This will affect to whom the Resolution will be addressed.
  • What are your desired outcomes?  What exactly are your recommendations for the governments?
  • How will your Resolution help women and/or other Canadians and does it also have relevance to women outside Canada?
  • Is there an educational component to your Resolution?
  • Does this issue deal specifically with Indigenous concerns?  If so, you may consider consulting with the Indigenous Peoples Sub-Committee and/or consulting directly with an appropriate Indigenous entity.
  • Is there a connection to any UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that could be explored in the Background of your Resolution?
  • Does this Resolution have the possibility (with modifications for the international arena) to go forward as a CFUW Resolution to a GWI Triennial or to other partners?
The Intent submission includes a proposed title/topic and short paragraph explaining the resolution.  It should include a comment on why it is important for CFUW to have a resolution on this topic at this time.  Your Intent does not need be a fully worded Resolved clause.

While Intents are being developed, the CFUW Resolutions Committee is available for advice.  If there are similar Resolution Intents being submitted the CFUW Resolutions Committee will contact all such proposers.  A joint submission from two proposers is always a possibility.

Using the “Intent to Submit a Resolution” Form in Appendix A, email the Intent to the CFUW Resolutions Chair and the CFUW Advocacy Coordinator.  The deadline for submission of Resolution Intents is November 15 for consideration at the next CFUW Policy Session.

The CFUW Resolutions Committee will review the submitted Resolution Intents with particular attention to:
  • Intents with a similar theme
  • Intents that are like other CFUW policy
  • Intended audience/outcomes
  • Alignment with CFUW mission and goals
The CFUW Resolutions Committee Chair will discuss the Resolution Intent with the Resolution Proposer regarding any observations the Committee has made.

National Office will inform all Clubs of all proposed Resolutions (Intents) no later than November 30th.

Other Ideas for Resolution Intents

  1. Updating Current Policy
At the September 22nd workshop, Margaret Therrien from the Policy Review Committee suggested the following CFUW policy needs updating. The current wording can be found at www.cfuwadmin.org
  • Vaping – Combine with an update of Tobacco and Health (1997) and Tobacco Health Education (1997)
  • Racial Discrimination – update of Policing and Race Relations (1993)
  • Gun Control – Update / Combine Ban on Semi-Automatic etc. (1990), Gun Control –Comprehensive (1994) and Regulation of Ammunition (1994)
  • Breast Cancer (1992)
  • Health – Pre and Post Natal (1979)
  • Abortion (1970

  1. Themes of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)
Additionally, the March 2023 Theme and Review Theme of the UN Commission on the Status of Women may suggest issues for Resolutions. Those are:
  • 2023: Priority theme: Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
  • Review theme: Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls (agreed conclusions of the sixty-second session).

The Intent should be submitted using Appendix A below.

Annual General Meeting - October 22 at 11:30am EST
To all CFUW members:

The CFUWCT AGM meetings are open to all CFUW, and we extend an invitation to all members to join us at our annual AGM.

Join Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85998280676?pwd=S3c4MThtZngrcExLcEhPTjlGQ0xwdz09
Meeting ID: 859 9828 0676
Passcode: 012220

These meetings are very brief, about half an hour, and this year it is to be on October 22 at 11:30 AM Eastern. It is followed by a speaker – one of our past Fellowship winners – Casey Oliver. She is speaking on an issue that has long been an interest of CFUW: sexual violence. She is scheduled for 1:30.

The connection between CFUW and the Trust is an important one. In essence, the Fellowships provided by the Trust are a concrete demonstration of the importance of the education mandate for CFUW. Our past winners are splendid examples of what the young women of Canada are achieving.  Whenever we hear one of them speak of their work, we are thrilled that CFUW and the CFUW Charitable Trust has been able to provide such important support.

Click here to see the 2022 Annual Report for your information. We would be delighted if you could join us for this meeting.

Our speaker on October 22: Casey Oliver:
B.Sc. Science and Psychology, 2014, University of Waterloo
M.A. Counselling Psychology, 2018, University of Western Ontario
M.A. Clinical Psychology, 2021, Lakehead University
Ph.D. Clinical Psychology, 2021-2025, Lakehead University

Casey’s dissertation focuses on sexual violence that is perpetrated through technology against women. She seeks to better understand whether this type of gender-based violence effects both the mental well-being of women and their use of technology. This could have grave implications for their academic and career participation, especially with the increasingly virtual nature of these settings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In-turn, this research could inform prevention and response strategies, including platform and government policies.

We hope you will join us.

CFUW Southport Addresses Loneliness

Loneliness and isolation are at an all-time high across our country. The pandemic certainly added to this condition. Thanks to the brilliant idea of CFUW Southport member Pat Dobec, two Caring Benches have been installed in Saugeen Shores. One is located in Port Elgin, the other in Southampton.

As Pat says, “a bench is a bench is a bench…but a bench with two people sitting on it sharing thoughts and ideas is a ‘Caring Bench’. We want these benches to be worn thin from people sitting on them and having real conversations.  The benches are for everyone, young, old, rich, poor, happy, sad, lonely and not so lonely.   We have more things in common with one another than we will ever know, unless we take the time to chat”.
