October 3, 2022

Dear Breton Downs Families,

Our fifth grade students returned on Friday after three amazing and exhausting days at Camp Miniwanca! Students enjoyed the high ropes course, canoeing, and team building activities in the area of service learning.  Thank you to the PTO for supporting this opportunity as well as the chaperones and fifth grade teachers who made the experience extra special for our students! Please enjoy some pictures from the camp below.

Spirit Week (October 3- 7)
This week East Grand Rapids High School celebrates Homecoming and our Breton Downs students enjoy participating in some of the activities.  Here are the “Spirit Week” happenings:

Spirit Week:  October 3- 7

  • Tuesday, October 4- What I Want to Be When I Grow Up Day

  • Wednesday, October 5- Wacky Wear and Hair Wednesday

  • Thursday, October 6- Dress Like a Teacher Day

  • Friday, October 7- Go East Day (Blue and Gold)

Homecoming Parade- Friday, October 7
The parade will start at 4:30 p.m. at Beechwood and Lake Drive and then turn westbound onto Lake Drive towards the high school.  It will continue on Lake Drive before turning right onto Lakeside, left into Gaslight Village, left onto Croswell, and ending in front of the High School on Lake Drive.

We will keep our tradition of throwing candy during the parade; however, candy will only be thrown from walking parade participants. Walking parade participants have been instructed to throw candy near the sidewalks and not in the streets.  We ask for your assistance in keeping our children safe. Young children tend to run into the street, putting them too close to the moving vehicles in the parade.  We are requesting that parents keep children near the curb and not allow them to enter the street.

Homecoming Football Game- Friday, October 7
The football game will start at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Field.

Fall Conferences:
As we head into fall it is the time of year to schedule for conferences.  Fall in-person conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 20 and Tuesday, October 25. This informational letter on Fall Conferences was sent via Skyward today.  Access to schedule Fall Conferences opens on Thursday, October 6 and closes on Wednesday, October 12 at 5:00 p.m.

Any questions or concerns, please contact Lisa Rogers at lrogers@egrp.org

October 31: Halloween Celebration at School:
Now that we are in the month of October, Halloween is just around the corner! On Monday, October 31, please send your child to school dressed in regular school clothes, as most of our celebrations will be held in the afternoon. Here are some reminders as you start thinking about costumes. Please note there is no school on Friday, October 28.

  • Students should plan on slipping on costumes over their clothes.  Students need to do this independently.

  • Please remember no full face masks, face paint, make-up, blood, or weapons.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month has begun! This year we are inviting families to celebrate with us by doing an optional BINGO board of activities. On the BINGO board, found here, there are different activities to learn more about the Hispanic culture like: visiting the Celebration of Souls Exhibit at the GRPM, building a replica of a Mayan or Aztec pyramid, going to a local restaurant that serves Hispanic food and more! At the end of HHM (October 15) students who participate can turn their boards in to be entered for a drawing. Winners will be randomly selected to enjoy a paleta party during recess.
Have fun learning about the beautiful culture.
