SEPTEMBER 2022

From the Leadership Team

Thanks to everyone who was able to join our first Strategic Planning Summit since 2019. We are working to collate all the ideas you shared about goals, tactics, DEI considerations, potential pitfalls, opportunities for collaboration, and how to measure our progress. We will share our findings over the next few months.

At the Summit we were able to share the accomplishments of the 2019-2022 strategic plan. While that was a nice summary of the long-term progress, we also prepare an annual Year-in-Review. This was displayed at the Summit, but in case you were not able to check it out then - you can find it here.

GIM Proud

We are so proud to share that the Palliative Care Service just earned their Joint Commission 5-peat! That is five consecutive Joint Commission site visits without a single finding. Anyone who has ever participated in a Joint Commission recertification knows what a monumental accomplishment that is. A few of the highlights noted:
-your genuine caring in face-to-face patient care
-your focus on learning the story of the patient in detail first and then making recommendations for next steps
-your collaboration with other members of the healthcare team
-your innovations and dedication to quality and performance improvement projects
Please join me in a round of applause for the entire team!

GIM is proud to have four members representing the Department of Medicine on the School of Medicine Faculty Senate. Congratulations to Christine Baugh, PhD, Carey Candrian, PhD, Elena Lebduska, MD,MEd, and Maurice Scott, MD and thank you for the effort you will undoubtedly put into your roles!

Clinical Operations Corner
Monthly updates on Primary Care Clinical Activities
by Rob Doolan
We are on the cusp of starting the pilots for the Bozarth Primary Care Initiative. These pilots will be looking at ways to provide scheduled time for the asynchronous work that has exploded over the last few years. I need to thank everyone in the Division who has contributed countless hours to get us to this point. We will be evaluating five different models of care through our clinics. I look forward to hearing how this is going from each of our clinics. Participants will note an adjustment on their expected cFTE that will adjust both the wRVU target and the expected clinical hours on the monthly Time-Productivity Report starting in November to reflect October data. Please continue to forward me your thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

Congratulations to Dr. Judy Regensteiner, Ludeman Center director and co-founder, and all the faculty and staff who made this event a huge success. You can read more about the event here.

Shout-out to Drs. Lisa Schilling and Danielle Loeb (once a GIM'er always a GIM'er) and colleagues for their recent publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Their work "aimed to determine the odds of cardiometabolic-related diagnoses in transgender and gender-diverse youth compared to matched controls in a cross-sectional analysis, using a large, multi-site database (PEDSnet)." You can read the full article here.
The Master of Science in Palliative Care (MSPC) hosted its three day virtual intensive for the Fall, 2022 cohort. The class of physicians, nurses, a chaplain, and a health practitioner took part in the palliative care curriculum by attending lectures on ethics, leadership, communication, a Go-Wish exercise, and even a virtual happy hour. Everyone managed to find the appropriate Zoom room at the appropriate time, including the faculty! The intensive was a dynamic and engaging experience for all.

Thanks to each of you who completed the baseline survey. The survey closes this afternoon, so if you have not been able to complete it yet - there is still time! Please look in your email for the link to the survey. We have over 70% participation in the survey so far and would love to get to 100% participation. We are sure to learn a lot about which variables make the most meaningful impact towards balancing clinical workload and the clinic day.
This month we received some lovely feedback from a mental health provider in the community in reference to our GIM Mental Health Program:

"The patients who you and your team have referred to us have benefited so much from working with you. You all do such a wonderful job of building a bridge into therapy for people who I think might have had a much trickier time getting going and sticking with it under different circumstances."
