LAUSD is also continuing to make progress on the ongoing path to academic recovery, with an agreement just reached to provide instructional support to our highest need students during extra “acceleration days” over winter and spring break. Along with tutoring, enrichment, mental health resources, and targeted support services, we will keep doing whatever it takes to ensure every child graduates ready for the world.
In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
It was great to meet with students, staff, and get to know some of our new principals with visits to Coeur d'Alene ES, KJ STEM Academy, and Stoner Ave. ES! We also hosted our first BD4 Youth Advisory Council meeting of the year at University HS, and I was thrilled to join our school administrators at AALA's fall reception!
In the Spotlight: A PSA Counselor Reconnecting Students to the Classroom
September is Attendance Awareness Month—and no one does more to help boost attendance and support chronically absent students than Pupil Service & Attendance Counselors like Ofelia "Sofi" Ryan! She began working in education at age 18 as a teachers assistant and then elementary school teacher, before becoming a PSA counselor over twenty years ago. Now serving as President of the APSAC, Ryan has seen a wide range of obstacles affecting attendance—and understands the importance of supporting students and working with families to help them reconnect with their school. Originally born and raised in Mexico, Ryan has been a lifelong advocate for the Latino and BIPOC communities, and for public education. We are grateful for her hard work and dedication—and for all our PSA counselors across LAUSD!
