First Aid Workshop

PGOSA will be holding a First Aid workshop on Monday, November 7th from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm so we can have trained a couple of members for each activity or sport.  Many took the workshop a year ago but we are offering it again as some wanted to attend but could not.  If you took the course last fall then this is not for you as your certification remains active for three years.

We would like two people from the major activities trained in Emergency First Aid – they would become designated First Aiders if there was an incident/accident while participating in an activity.  If interested in taking this excellent workshop, please speak to your Activity manager and he/she will forward your name to Doug Williams.  The workshop will be conducted by a First Alert trainer and covers CPR with and without an AED.

No cost as PGOSA will cover registration and a lunch!

Active Aging Week

This first week of October is the annual Active Aging Week sponsored by the RDN Recreation with the goal of getting seniors physically active by providing free opportunities where seniors can drop in and participate in ongoing sessions sponsored by organizations in the Oceanside area.  Take advantage of this – pick an activity or two you have been wanting to try and go out and get involved!  Your health will thank you for it!

Look for the ads in our local newspaper or listen to the local  radio stations to get further details or check it out on the RDN website.

PGOSA General Meeting

Giving everyone advanced notice of the next General Meeting for members – all are invited so mark the date time on your calendars and plan around it!

Wednesday, November 16th – 7:00 pm at The Bradley Centre in Coombs

General Meetings are where the PGOSA Board of Directors conduct their organizational business in public.  Members can pose questions or concerns and can comment on business being discussed. If needed Motions from the floor can be made and voted on.  Hopefully with lots of advance notice we will get a good turnout of interested members.
Organizations are dynamic, fluid and always changing depending upon their leadership and the wishes of their members.  Don’t be a bystander – get Involved and be part of the leadership who leads and guides the organization.  New ideas, new blood, new activities are possible but it takes someone with some drive to get things going!  Be that person who sparks new activities or takes over for one of our aging leaders!

Curling at Parksville Curling Rink

Curling on PGOSA COED recreational teams will continue this fall, starting on Thursday, October 6 from 11:15 to 1:15 pm at the Parksville Curling Club in Parksville Community Park.

We are full for regular league  players but spares always needed. If you are a curler and would like to play a few games, email Jim Powell (trijim@shaw.ca) to get on the spare list.

Regular curlers will receive Team and Schedule information early in the week so they can be prepared for the games on Thursday.

Sad News

Long time PGOSAn Terry Dyer passed away unexpectedly earlier this week, doing something he was known for – riding his bike!  Terry was a cyclist, ball player and curler and had been involved in PGOSA for many years.  Our thoughts are with his wife Valerie, also a PGOSA member, and all his family.  For more details watch the local paper for his obituary.

Local environmental group is holding its AGM

Our local streamkeepers group, Mid Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society (MVIHES) is having their Annual General Meeting on October 1.

What: MVIHES AGM and “Re-visiting Eelgrass in Parksville/Qualicum: What Can it Tell Us?”
Where: Parksville Community Centre, 233 Mills St (behind Starbucks)
When: 10:00 am, October 1

Hear about all the things we have accomplished over the past year, from monitoring programs and habitat restoration.
Then stick around to hear speaker Nikki Wright talk about eel grass.
https://seachangesociety.com/aboutpg/

Eelgrass is often mistaken for a seaweed, but it is actually a flowering aquatic plant which has evolved to colonize the marine environment. The combination of fresh and salt water, sediment, light and organisms interact to form a unique and biodiverse system. It is estimated that over 80 percent of commercial fish and shellfish species depend on eelgrass habitat at some point in their lifecycle. Eelgrass beds also assist in coastal protection by supplying a physical barrier and reducing coastline erosion.
