The Piping Hot Monthly

WELL MET FRIENDS!!!

Welcome to the very first issue of the Get Piped newsletter, The Piping Hot Monthly; A newsletter dedicated exclusively to the wonderful folks that make up the Get Piped Pipe Community (GPPC). Our aim here is to provide a monthly recap of all things Get Piped, from the YouTube Channel, the Podcast, the Galactic Get Piped Pipe Club (GGPPC), to the current happenings in the pipe smoking community, Nick and I’s thoughts on such happenings, and anything else community related! This newsletter will release the 1st of every month and will feature several segments, if you may, and look to continue the “print” source of pipe and tobacco content out there.

Thanks so much for signing up for the newsletter! Read at your own leisure, and as always, Get Piped!

LOOKING BEHIND

The Podcast

September was an incredibly fun month for the Get Piped Podcast. We just completed the first annual “Tolkien Month” in celebration of all the wonderful pipe smoking content that stemmed from Mr. J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth Legendarium. We are looking to continue this series every September moving forward. Why September? Well, of course, because of Bilbo’s (and Frodo’s) Birthday! September the 22nd; their day, is also known throughout the Tolkien fandom community as “Hobbit Day” for the same reason. It’s just the perfect month to get back into reading the books, watching the films, and discussing the pipes and tobacco of Middle Earth!

So, that said, September was an incredibly imaginative and thoughtful month from Get Piped Podcasr, featuring:

033 Anecdottle: Pipe Smokers Ushered in Nuclear War

Okay, contrary to everything we stated above, we dropped the ball here. This episode, having released on the first of September, was NOT Tolkien related. That said, the belated start to Tolkien Month was worthy, as this episode took a very solemn yet awe inspiring venture through the history of Nuclear Warfare and how several pipe smokers left their mark in the history books. The account comes from GP’s firsthand experience, having visited the National Nuclear Science and Power Museum in Albuquerque, NM. There, he spotted a myriad of exhibits featuring pipe smokers; old black and white photos with some of the worlds most brilliant and albeit terrible in a sense, minds smoking tobacco pipes.

034 One (Smoke) Ring to Rule Them All: The Pipes of Tolkien’s Legendarium

In 034 we discussed our imaginative take on what pipes were probably like in Middle Earth. We cross referenced direct quotes and pulled from Tolkien’s thoughts to report and chat about what pipes different characters or races might have smoked! A great discussion balancing both “fact” (from text) and imagination.

035 Smokelore: Theoden, King of Rohan

GP’s personal favorite of the month, was 035, where the king of Rohan himself had sent in a handwritten letter to the Get Piped Podcast. Producer Guy, gave an excellent reading of the note, telling of the trials and tribulations of the Great War of the Ring. Theoden reflects on the peculiar practice of pipe smoking that he found great interest in after meeting a small hobbit. Theoden then writes asking about pipe recommendations from GP himself. The rest of the episode covers those real world recommendations of lord of the rings inspired pipes on the market today.

036 Where There’s Smoke, There’s Briar: The Impact of the LOTR Film Trilogy on Pipe Smoking

Ahh.. yes. A new series! We decided to add to the fun with a new creation, something that has become a meme at this point. WTSTB offers a free and open discussion on the impact of something in media, pop culture, film, or world event, that essentially positively (or maybe negatively) impacts the pipe smoking hobby. What better way than to discuss Peter Jackson’s film adaptations? In 036, GP and PG polled community members on their thoughts! They then provide their own opinions on both the emotional and physical impacts the films had on the hobby, from encouraging new members, to the launching of Middle Earth inspired tobaccos, and even the influx of Churchwarden style pipes. That said, they also discuss the opposition. Those who may not have preferred the Tolkienisms that pushed pipe smoking in a certain direction.

037 Tobacco Through Time: The Races of Middle Earth

037, and PG’s favorite episode throughout the month, was the second installment of TTT. This time, we took a look at specific races found in middle earth, and GP tagged each race with a particular tobacco type (I.e. Virginia, Burley, etc.) 5 races and 5 tobacco categories were discussed, but Producer Guy went ahead and did Producer Guy things, and added in some bonus pieces to the segment, which made for a really entertaining and fun conversation.

The Channel

Moreover, of course we can’t forget the wonderful (and yes this is Adam writing) ((I’ll always gas myself up)) Get Piped YouTube channel! The foundation of it all…

September featured two video installments that were dedicated not to Tolkien, but rather to pipe shows! With October upon us, there are several pipe shows upcoming and I really wanted to put out some quality content focusing on attending shows in general. ESPECIALLY since the Get Piped team, to include Get Wifed and Producer wife, will be attending the Vegas International Pipe Show this very month!

The following two episodes will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about pipe shows in general and also to equip yourself with some tips and recommendations for success at your first or even next pipe show!

Pipe Smoking Shows: Why You Need to Attend a Smoking Pipe Show

This episode takes an overarching approach to explaining the ins and outs of a show. I cover the magic that’s presented within a show and then make some pretty strong arguments on why you should plan to attend one one day! It was a fun open discussion, having shared my experiences from Chicago, and my aspirations for future shows.

Surviving Your First Pipe Show | Tamp it Tuesday: Pipe Smoking Tips

For the second installment, I wanted to continue the show train and produce a TIT. Tamp it Tuesday is Get Piped’s exclusive 2 minute (ish) tip and recommendation series that focuses on something pipe smoking related. This episode, as the title suggests, equips you with the knowledge and tools necessary to crush it at your first or next pipe show. I cover 10 tips in an energetic and entertaining fashion. I also pulled from the Vegas International Pipe Show’s website FAQ, and tied in my thoughts. It was a really enjoyable recording session and I’m hoping you enjoyed the viewing experience!

LOOKING AHEAD

As we close September and welcome October, Producer Guy and I are zeroing in on Vegas International preparations. The weekend of October 21st to the 23rd, we will be at the show, WITH our very own Get Piped Table. There, we will promote our Podcast and my YouTube channel. Furthermore, we will look to interact and engage with YOU, the GPPC; something we are ecstatic about.

But as for the content, here is what’s on the docket this month:

The Podcast

  • 038 Pipe Dreams
  • 039 Feehand Fables
  • 040 Down the Rabbit Bowl
  • 041 What’s Up in Smoke

The Channel

  • Factory Spotlight: I received an incredible package from a pipe manufacturer last month, with the agreement that I’d create a video presenting on the factory. The idea was to expand my “Spotlight” series from just the “Artisan” and present on the “Factory” pipes. All pipes are good pipes. If you’re smoke a pipe with tobacco, you’re a pipe smoker. This one should be a lot of fun.

  • The Pipe Smoker’s Ritual: This video has been a long time coming. I wrote the script for this one back in July? Maybe June? I then recorded the A-Roll (the main talking head portrait shots in a video) soon thereafter but wasn’t satisfied with the presentation. I scrapped the video after a ton of editing. It wasn’t until August where I was in New Mexico, that I found the time to really plan it out and make it anew. I re-recorded the script in a narrative format and have been working on a pretty beautiful presentation of that script through B-Roll (the cinematic shots that play over the A-Roll throughout a a video). This video is well underway and I’m super excited to see the final product I come up with. I think you will really really enjoy it.

The Dot Co

Fall Collection: Producer Guy and I (but really Producer Guy at my behest) have been working on the future of the website. Our intent is to provide positive and desirable merch options that only subtlety promote the brand but also support the GPPC in terms of design. We will be releasing a run of Autumn-y clothing soon! I love a good long sleeve and hoody when the leaves are turning and the cider is steaming.

PRODUCER GUY’S 2¢

I am so excited for the LVIPS but I can’t help but look back on how much the community around Get Piped has grown over the last nine months. I never thought I would even be part of the piping community…

The plan from the beginning of the Get Piped Podcast was for me to be an occasional guest and help in editing some of the episodes. Fast forward 37 episodes and I cannot begin to explain the impact that this community has had on me.

I have met hundreds of people through the Galactic Get Piped Pipe Club hosted on discord, I have commissioned pipes by two amazing artisans, and have received multiple shipments of tobacco out the blue from some incredible folks. I want to end these couple cents with, if you have happened to lose hope in humanity these past couple of arduous years, I would challenge you to look a little harder for the goodness in the humanity that is right around you.

GET PIPED’S 3¢

Obviously, I’m super excited for October. Producer Guy and I have been putting in WORK to make Vegas a success for the Pod, the Channel, and our hearts. A much needed break is in order from work and the state of Washington to be completely honest. My goals ahead are to aggressively present Vegas show content. I want the GPPC to really feel as if they are in attendance as best as possible. I want to encourage folks to attend the next one and I want new folks to enter the hobby. We have a great episode already recorded and scheduled for the month that will dive deeper into this idea and I’m super excited to share it soon.

But as for the following months, we will be looking to celebrate the holidays with you! More on that to come as well.

Thanks so much for reading through the very first newsletter! It was a blast to make! The following editions will likely continue to mold into a more final product but we’re happy to get to share this piece with you!

FROM THE COMMUNITY

Thank you, again, for taking the time to read our first edition of The Piping Hot Monthly. We look forward to seeing you again next month! Until then…

Cheers and Get Piped,

Get Piped
