Shiplake College Drinks - 17th October

Dear Friends of Shiplake College

The Headmaster, Tyrone Howe, would be delighted if you could join him for drinks and canapés on Monday 17 October, between 7.30pm and 9.00pm in the Great Hall at Shiplake College, for a community get together.

As you will be aware, the pandemic has prevented us from holding this event since 2019 but this year we are looking forward to being able to welcome many of our neighbours and members of the local community to the College.

Please respond by Wednesday 12 October if you would like to attend. Dress: Smart casual.

Warm regards, Katherine

NOTICES

Martyn Read - RIP

You will be aware that Martyn Read, a valued member of our Harpsden congregation, choir and benefice community, died peacefully on Sunday 25th September. Our prayers are with his family; may he rest in peace and rise in glory. His funeral will be on Wednesday 19th October at 12 noon at Harpsden Church.

Harvest Festival Donations

Collections of food and other produce will be going to the Henley Food Bank after our Harvest Festivals. Nomad (Henley) have kindly let me know that they have sufficient in the way of beans, pasta and sanitary products and that they really need the following please:

  • Toiletries: shower gel, shampoo etc.
  • Coffee
  • Crisps
  • Biscuits
  • Tinned fruit, veg and meat
Golf Day
Following on from Sue Wright’s excellent article in the Harpsden Parish Mag re the very successful Golf Day in aid of St Margarets, this event cannot go by without an appreciation of the tremendous commitment and sheer hard graft put in by Sue herself. The organisation was almost single handed although Tony surely had to handle the disappointments when things went wrong, so thanks to him too and of course his wallet.
What an extraordinary amount of money raised (£1,800 or so) so there were some very generous folk out there, very many thanks to them for contributing to such an enjoyable day.
The Burtts

Welcome back Robert …

The Benefice service on Sunday 25th marked many moments both personal and for our church family. For Sarah it has started a short break from duties and so, with her agreement, I write for us.

As we welcomed Robert back, Sarah and I were given gifts to thank us for what we had done during his sabbatical.

We are of one mind that it is what the members of each church did that was ‘thankable’.

We would like to make a very public recognition of the support and teamwork that not only meant smooth transition into Robert’s rest and re-creation time but also meant the Benefice is ready for ways to move on into the next season – half term activities for all from 1-101, the nativity walk, lay-led leadership blossoming, Benefice social times like harvest lunch and concerts etc … We have not trodden water waiting for our rector. That is a powerful witness to an active church, and Christians seeking to connect with the wider community.

Robert asked us what went well while he was focussed elsewhere … it was so good to give him an update and share our delights in what we, the Benefice, had been doing.

Yes we thank you for the gifts and the kind words on Sunday but we want to thank everyone in these 3 churches for how we have come together in worship and pastoral care.

Our gift labels said ‘from the Benefice family’ – what a joy and privilege it is to be God’s family.

Peace be with you

Sarah and Pam

‘Create for Christmas!’ Half term Activity Week - HELP needed

We are running sessions each morning during half term for all ages (1-101) offering a variety of creative, musical and physical activities at Shiplake Church - posters are now appearing and bookings are open, please pass it on

We are seeking volunteers to offer a few hours of help, giving those attending the opportunity to make some really lovely presents and learn new craft skills, as well as experiencing dance, music, baking and more. No experience is necessary, leaders will run the sessions.

If you can help, please contact Jo Taylor by email or on 07985 703126 so we know we have sufficient support. Volunteering times will be 9.30 - 12.30 as the sessions will run from 10 - noon Monday to Friday 24th - 28th October.

Many thanks. Jo, Wendy, Pam and Sarah

Choir Practice at Dunsden

Margaret and Adrian Fish have volunteered to lead a weekly, informal choir practice at Dunsden Church to encourage new voices and to learn some new music. If you like singing and are interested in joining in, just turn up at 11am on a Saturday at All Saints Church.

For more information, contact Margaret on 07824 177151 or by email.

Join us to ring

Our handchimes group is open for the students of Year 2 or above. The children will have the opportunity to learn simple tunes, increase their musical knowledge, learn how to work as a team but, most of all, have a lot of fun.

We are holding a weekly rehearsal each Friday at 4:30-5:30, starting from 9 September 2022, in The Ark (behind Shiplake Church). There are a limited number of places available; to ensure a place, please email me your child’s name and year group, and your name and contact number.

Thank you. Helen Lam
