October 2022

I’m feeling excited about the fall arriving.

October reminds me of a cornucopia of abundance, and right now I feel life is opening up to abundance. Restrictions are off and we can move freely once again. With that in mind, would you like to join us for some winter sunshine? Our Mexico (Nov) and Costa Rica (Feb) trainings are open for participants as teacher trainees, teacher refreshers, or to simply have a yoga retreat. Everyone is welcome to study with us at whatever level you wish to participate. Visit the website and check the options under “Programs”. Give us a call or email if you need more information. We would to spend time with you in an atmosphere of yoga!

Sometimes I feel people shy away from yoga philosophy, feeling it is too heavy or hard to understand. Well I LOVE it, so have decided to create a video series of yoga philosophical gems. The videos will be short and to the point – not long winded. I will choose topics that have been life-changing for me and many others, such as the 5 kinds of thoughtwaves, the 3 qualities of nature, the 5 vital airs, and a lot more! These recordings will be shared on facebook and Instagram. Stay tuned!

In case you missed it, SOYA has a Seva Scholarship available for teachers who know of a student who otherwise couldn’t attend yoga classes. If you know of someone you would like to recommend for this scholarship, please fill in the application form so we can share with them the wealth of yoga! https://www.soyayoga.com/seva-scholarship/

We hope your October is abundant in so many ways. And if you need more abundance in your life, perhaps try doing a daily mala of this mantra which is specific to attracting abundance into your life: Om Shreem Maha Lakshmiyea Svaha.

Thank you for being a part of our abundance.

Throne Pose (Bhadrasana)

The Poise, Power and Humility of the Goddess Durga

In his book, Dr. Balkaran shares a wonderful story about a king and a merchant that have much in common, despite coming from vastly different worlds. This tale is one of the mythological stories represented in the asana, Bhadrasana, also known as the Throne Pose.

Having lost everything they loved in their lives, exiled and alone, a king and a merchant find themselves in the same ashram. Both of them are in despair, and despite the fact that they were cheated by their very people, they find themselves wondering after the welfare of their respective communities. Seeking solace, they turn to the sage. They ask him to shed light on the nature of their pain... Read more and enjoy excerpts from Raj's book "The Stories Behind the Poses"

Quiet, Calm and Powerful Bhadrasana
(the Butterfly Pose)

by Rebecca Stone, SOYA Faculty, E-RYT500

This classic yoga pose is known by many names. Bhadrasana, the Butterfly pose, and Baddha Konasana, the Bound Angle Pose. It is also known as Throne Pose, Cobbler’s Posture, and the Ankle Knee Pose (IYTA Handbook of 84 Traditional Asanas).

Read here on the blog how to try Bhadrasana yourself, and learn the benefits and several variations of this seated asana.

Pranava Dhvanyatmaka Pranayama

This beautiful pranayama focuses on the sounds of OM. The Mandukya Upanishad speaks of the 4 sounds of OM and here we practice them. This technique is described more fully on pg 107 of Letters from the Yoga Masters. Here Mugs guides you through the practice.

This and many more techniques from Letters from the Yoga Masters on the SOYA Youtube Channel.

Seva Scholarship Fund

This SOYA program has been generously funded by friends of SOYA who have assisted in fundraising efforts through the sale of used yoga props and books. This scholarship fund is intended to serve yoga students who have had less access to yoga, including:

  • LGBTQQIA+
  • BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color)
  • Economically marginalized
  • Differently-abled individuals
  • Other situations where a student has been unable to access yoga

Any qualified or certified yoga teacher may nominate a person whom they feel would benefit from and be interested in experiencing some yoga classes with them, and where the student would otherwise be unable to attend. These classes may be in asana, meditation, pranayama, restorative, or specific approaches to yoga such as restorative, yin, or adaptive. The scholarship fund will award up to $100, to be paid directly to the studio or teacher offering the classes or programming.
