October is PCUSA
Domestic Violence Awareness Month

According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, on average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States.  That’s more than 12 million women and men over the course of a year.  Nearly 1 in 4 (24.3%) women and 1 in 7 (13.8%) men aged 18 or older in the United States have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime

Dear Friends,

The overhead pictures from Florida are beyond comprehension.  Indeed, as the PDA offers below, God's people are called on to stand in the "GAP"---Give. Act. Pray.  And here is a hymn/prayer that was shared in the Presbyterian Outlook:

O God of All Creation

AURELIA 7.6.7.6 D  (“The Church’s One Foundation”)

O God of all creation, as ocean waters warm,
we grieve the devastation that comes with violent storms.
We pray for people struggling — who need your help and grace
on every flooded island and in each flooded place.

We pray for all your children, so dearly loved by you,
who know such great destruction as winds and rains crash through.
We pray for all those hurting, who grieve for what is gone—
for neighbors, friends and siblings who struggle to go on.

We pray, O Lord, for churches that help to build anew.
We pray for rescue workers and all the good they do.
We pray for those with vision who serve as they restore —
who make homes more efficient and stronger than before.

O Christ who calmed the waters and stilled the stormy seas,
You teach us: “Love your neighbors!” and “Humbly care for these!”
Now lead us by your Spirit to gladly lend a hand —
on every struggling island and in each hurting land.

Gospel reading for Friday, October 7:  Luke 8:1-15

1Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God.  The twelve were with him, 2as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3and Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources.

4When a great crowd gathered and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable: 5"A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.  6Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture.  7Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it.  8Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold."  As he said this, he called out, "Let anyone with ears to hear listen!"

9Then his disciples asked him what this parable meant.  10He said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak in parables, so that 'looking they may not perceive, and listening they may not understand.'

11"Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.  12The ones on the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.  13The ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy.  But these have no root; they believe only for a while and in a time of testing fall away.  14As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear; but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.  15But as for that in the good soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.

JESUS DOES NOT sound like Saint Paul or Thomas Aquinas or John Calvin when we hear him teaching in the Gospels.  "Once upon a time" is what he says.  Once upon a time somebody went out to plant some seeds.  Once upon a time somebody stubbed a toe on a great treasure. Once upon a time somebody lost a precious coin.  The Gospels are full of the stories Jesus tells, stories that are alive in somewhat the way the truth is alive, the way he himself is alive when Pilate asks him about truth, and his silence is a way of saying "Look at my aliveness if you want to know! Listen to my life!"  Matthew goes so far as to tell us that "he said nothing to them without a parable," that is to say without a story, and then quotes the words, "I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world."  In stories the hiddenness and the utterance are both present, and that is another reason why they are a good way of talking about God's truth which is part hidden and part uttered too.

Fall Faith

Today we combed the flower beds for Spring,
A father and two scavenging little girls,
Feeling among the fertile deaths of Fall
For next year's garden.  Labeling our crop
Of gleanings into Fiona's extra
Birth Announcement envelopes.
P for Petunia, N for Nasturtium,
I - Impatiens, S - Snapdragon.
"See, this one has an ant in its mouth."
Small harvest heaps we built
Pods, motes, and corms, and curls,
Time capsules, May through August gaiety,
Granaried against another, unseen sun,

Thus faith, we pass it on from day to day.
Not listing, systematic presentation,
No catechismic, roting recitation
Of the "I believes".
A cellar work bench piled
With Fiona's extra Birth Announcement envelopes,
P for Petunia, I - Impatiens,
S - Snapdragon...
Tokens, earnests, pledges sealed,
Outward and visible signs
of inward and spiritual hope,
Of warmth, of growth, of gaiety,
And of glory.
