Wheatgrass Books will host author Scott Hibbard, author of Beyond the Rio Gila, for a reading and book signing Thursday, October 13th at 7 pm.
"In 1844, seventeen-year-old Moses Cole leaves home when his pa lays him out with a number two shovel, walks from the Shenandoah farmstead to Pennsylvania and stumbles into the First Dragoons as an underage recruit. So begins the story’s geographical arc which carries the reader from Virginia to San Diego and back through the journey of Private Moses Cole. Its emotional arc includes loss, gain, and hard lessons as Moses Cole comes-of-age before returning to his soul mate back home."
The novel’s historical backbone is the Army of the West and the march of the Mormon Battalion from Council Bluffs to San Diego in 1846 to 1847 during the Mexican-American War.
For the reading, Scott will focus on various aspects of writing a historical novel. Since Rio Gila is his first novel he had to learn how to write it as he went. The process included finding a historical event that he wanted to write about, doing the research to learn the history, and creating a fictional component to relay that history. He'll talk about that process and some things he learned about writing a historical novel. He is currently working on a sequel that follows some of the same characters into the Utah War eleven years later.

Mark Sullivan is the acclaimed #1 bestselling author of nineteen novels, including “The Last Green Valley,” “Beneath a Scarlet Sky,” and “Silver Stars in The Sky,” which is forthcoming in 2023. "In 2018, Chickechick, an Araucona chicken, was mauled by a dog that came into my yard. Severely wounded and near death, I brought her into my house where I attended to her every need. She lived in my sunroom for four months. During this time I felt her vulnerability become trust as she recovered. A deep bond developed between us that expanded my heart - - love does heal.
The ordeal of saving her life, caring for her wounds, and watching her go from being unable to move, to standing, walking, and eventually laying an egg, changed something in me. My eyes and heart were opened to the profound mystery that lies beyond a perceived experience.
As a result, I was able to view my 35 years of photography in a whole new way. I saw that through vulnerability, trust, and inner guidance, I had captured the profound mystery of connection between each person and the setting in which I placed them. The symbiotic relationships in each photo create a mythical playground for infinite interpretation - - beyond a personal experience."

Wheatgrass is excited to have a new indoor mural by local artist Kay Potter. Kay is, among other things, an artist and active community member.
    
"I love working in my studio, but even more, I love working on projects where other people are involved. Whether that be a guest at a wedding, a mom who just lost her beloved parrot, or a random stranger walking by on the sidewalk. I want the art I make to fit into our world, to be a part of it, and to be involved and related. I like being a person someone can call and say, "Hey, can you do this for me?" and I can say why yes, yes I can make that happen. I love being an active participant in community building and beautifying."- Kay
The goal of the mural is to build awareness and direct attention to the second floor of the store. While the bulk of books and gifts are on the main floor, a lot of good things can be discovered upstairs: Green Door Gallery with ongoing exhibits, art prints, author talks, book groups, pop-up events and more.
