Dr. Claudia Schröder-Adams, Professor Emeritus, Carleton University, will highlight the remarkable changes in Canadian Arctic landscapes over millions of years, and the effects those changes have had on Arctic ecosystems through time, followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A. See how important geodiversity is to Canada’s landscapes, ecosystems, and society.

Science Café | Climate Change – Energy, Technology, and Humanity - Wednesday, Oct. 5
As part of the UNESCO Geodiversity Week, we invite you to join us for our next virtual Science Café on Wednesday, October 5th, 2022 at 2:30pm for ‘Climate Change: Energy, Technology, and Humanity.’ This presentation will look at how our population growth, coupled with our increased energy use has resulted in the current climate crisis. Discussions on possible paths forward including structural and economic change, as well as the promise and perils of technology will be explored.

2022 Fields-Carleton Distinguished Lecture - Thursday, Oct. 13
The enjoyment of music and art are uniquely human experiences. Yet we still do not understand the attributes that lead us to appreciate some artistic works and not others. In this talk, Dr. Leon Glass will address how concepts in mathematics can help us to think about these matters, and challenge you to think about what you hear and see, and how you do it.

Carleton Science Food Sustainability Week, Tuesday, Oct. 11 – Sunday, Oct. 16
Sunday, October 16 is UN World Food Day which promotes worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger. In recognition, the Food Science program at Carleton will be highlighting key research all week that presents a sustainable path toward food security as well as hosting a few Food Science-centric events. On Tuesday, October 11 from 1pm - 2:30pm, join Food Science researchers at the caf to learn about their work in the field. Dining Services will also be providing sustainable themed food samples. On Saturday, October 15 from 12pm - 4pm, join Carleton Science students off campus at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum for onsite demonstrations and activities that demonstrate the many ways Carleton Researchers are contributing toward food security in the world today. Finally, stay tuned for a Food Science centric Science Café coming later this month!

The 23rd Annual Biology Butterfly Show -
Saturday, Oct. 1 – Sunday, Oct. 9
Every year the Carleton University Biology Department invites the community to experience the magic of butterflies during the Annual Biology Butterfly Show. During the 9 days leading into the Thanksgiving weekend, over 1300 live exotic butterflies, representing 41 different species worldwide, are released into the greenhouses of the Nesbitt Biology building.

Robyn McQuaid Receives Investment from the Canada Foundation for Innovation
Congratulations to Department of Neuroscience researcher, Robyn McQuaid on being one of ten Carleton University researchers that were successful in the latest round of research infrastructure funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation. Robyn's research examines the neurobiology of trauma to inform personalized treatments for mental illnesses.

Associate Vice-President (Teaching and Learning), David Hornsby recently announced the outstanding educators who have been named 2022 Carleton University Teaching Award winners. Congratulations to Zachary Patterson for Receiving a New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award
Zachary Patterson, an Instructor II in the Department of Neuroscience, has actively pursued teaching excellence since he began his career at Carleton, earning him a 2022 New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award. His passion for student wellness and success is evident. During the pandemic, he received two Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) grants to research the impact of compassionate grading and instruction on student stress and academic achievement, as well as to look at how modes of learning on-campus and online influence mental wellness and academic success. He also developed an institutional Wellness Service Navigator app that will be launched shortly.

Carleton Opens Groundbreaking Ericsson-Carleton Mobile Wireless Lab
Last month more than 75 Carleton University community members, government officials and industry representatives gathered to mark the official opening of the Ericsson-Carleton Mobile Wireless Lab in Carleton’s ARISE building. The lab is a part of the existing Ericsson partnership created to expand experiential learning and research in wireless communications. Researchers in the School of Computer Science are ready to hit the ground running in the new lab. Many are already conducting studies in areas like machine learning, drone navigation, robotics, immersive virtual reality and localization.

Coronavirus Resources
Carleton University is following the advice of Ottawa Public Health, the Ontario Ministry of Health, Public Health Ontario, and the Public Health Agency of Canada for the latest information about the coronavirus (COVID-19) and recommendations for prevention. Carleton’s Coronavirus website contains a summary of facts from these health agencies as well as answers to questions Carleton faculty, staff, students, and the community may have.
The university has also prepared a list of frequently asked questions regarding COVID-19. Review the FAQ to ensure you are up to speed with the latest information and updates.
