News and Notes

THANK YOU

Thank you - once again - to everyone who helped over another busy weekend, with Harvest Festival followed by a bring-and-share lunch on Sunday. Many thanks to everyone who brought harvest gifts, arranged the beautiful harvest flower displays, contributed to lunch, ate and drank, and helped clear up!

Harvest gifts went to FareShare Dundee, together with donations of £112.67 for refreshments on Climate Sunday. Donations of £60 at the Harvest lunch go to the Diocese of Swaziland.

CATHEDRAL ROLL

The Cathedral AGM is on Sunday 20 November. So in October we will be revising and checking the Cathedral Roll.
  • If you are a communicant member over 18 on the Roll, you will get an email next week with the details we have for you.
  • If you are a communicant member over 18 and you're not on the Roll, or if you think you are but you don't get an email by next Friday, please contact the Provost:
    provost@saintpaulscathedral.net
Communicant members over 18 are entitled to vote and to stand for election at the AGM. Elections will be held for vacancies on the Vestry as people complete their 3-year terms, and for the Lay Representative and Alternate Lay Representative who are also Vestry members but are elected annually.

Think about standing for the Vestry. The Vestry meets about 10 times a year, usually on the third Tuesday evening of the month. Meetings are hybrid so members can attend by Zoom or in-person. The Vestry helps set a direction for the Cathedral and it monitors our activities and our use of resources. Being on the Vestry is a governance role, so you need to be willing to ask questions and put forward ideas. You also need to be eligible to be a charity trustee. Vestry meetings are interesting and short*, with a range of people involved in Cathedral activities reporting on their work. If you think you could be part of that, talk to the Provost.
*reasonably short. Getting shorter.

SATURDAY OPENING

Normally the Cathedral opens for a couple of hours on Saturdays, from 2.00 to 4.00 pm. Staffing it just means being available in the building, to keep an eye on things and in case visitors have questions.
There are now good resources for visitors, including a walk-round guide, and we had 175 people coming through the doors on Doors Open Day. We're the only church that's regularly open for visitors in the city centre. It would be very good if we were able to be open regularly on Saturdays and usually we can, thanks to a small team of volunteers. But we do need more volunteers. Could you help? Contact Bob at treasurer@saintpaulscathedral.net

SUPPORT FOR REFUGEES

The University of Dundee are engaging with a number of Ukrainian refugee families and students. They are currently looking for people who might be able to volunteer to help at events and who might be able to invite two or three Ukrainians for a meal at home as a way that they can build connections with local families. If you might be able to help in one of these ways please contact Roxanne at roxanne@saintpaulscathedral.net

COSY SPACE /CRAFT CAFE - DROP IN

Over the winter months a number of churches and voluntary organisations across Dundee will be offering drop in Cosy Spaces.

In discussion earlier this year there was some interest in a Drop In Craft Cafe style event before the Thursday Eucharist. An opportunity to have a cuppa and even a simple soup lunch whilst knitting/crafting/playing board games and even sharing some of those skills.

The above two ideas might work well if combined!

Please can you let Roxanne know if:
  • This is something you might be interested in attending;
  • You might be able to help set up/put the coffee on and tidy;
  • You have any particular skill or craft that you would bring with you (knitting/cross stitch).

FLOWERS

Thank you to the team who have contributed and arranged flowers for Harvest. There's a beautiful autumnal display in the Cathedral.

After this, the flower team will step back; they're a small team and they all have many calls on their time. There will still be flowers, but less regularly. If you are someone who could provide a flower display from time to time, you would be very welcome to do that. Please contact admin@saintspaulscathedral.net first, so that we can avoid duplication and make arrangements about access, watering and clearing away.

BEGINNING & BECOMING: the Apostles’ Creed

A series of discussions on the Christian faith, based on the book The Apostles' Creed by Ben Myers (2018).

Do you want to find out more about what Christians believe, ask questions, or take a fresh look? Are you thinking about being baptised or confirmed? Come along - all welcome. Sessions are on Wednesday evenings. The next session is on the 19th of October, 7.00 - 8.00 pm, at St Paul’s Cathedral and online via Zoom.

FIRST AIDERS

Are you an up-to-date First Aider? Would you be willing to be on the welcomers' list of First Aiders, as someone who could help in an emergency during a Sunday service? If so, please let the Provost know or email admin@saintpaulscathedral.net.
CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS

For this choir year, the Cathedral is once again offering choral scholarships. These are a great opportunity for both children and students, so do share this information far and wide. Application forms can be found here. There are also application forms at the back of the church. Click on the flyers below for larger versions.
The 50 Club

One way you can support the choral scholarship scheme is by joining the 50 club.

It's a club of 50 people that commit to contributing £5 every month for a period of one year, and each month, one lucky member wins £50, with the rest of the money going to the choral scholarship fund. The amount of money raised can support up to 4 choral scholars for the year, and many of our existing choir members have benefited from the scheme.

If you'd like to get involved, pick up a 50 club booklet from the back desk in the cathedral. It contains all the information you need to get started.

Readings this Sunday

Readings this Sunday, 9th October, are for Pentecost 18: 2 Kings 5:1-3, 7-15a, 2 Timothy 2:8-15, Luke 17:11-19

Do not be misled by the ducks. This is a sheepwash, for sheep. It works on much the same principle as a drive-in carwash. You line up your sheep beside the river, remove the plank and encourage the sheep into the river. The indignant sheep make for the nearest dry ground and find themselves in the sheepfold on the other side. Job done.

In the first reading on Sunday we have Naaman the Syrian. He is a mighty warrior and commander of the army, but he has leprosy. He hears from a servant about the powers of Elisha the prophet, so he sets out from home and turns up with his chariots and horses outside Elisha's house. Elisha sends out a messenger telling Naaman to go and wash in the river Jordan. Naaman, as indignant as a sheep in a sheepwash, says there are perfectly good rivers in Syria he could have washed in. He was expecting something much more impressive from the prophet. ‘I thought that for me he would surely come out, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy!' But his servant - servants are important in this story - says that if the prophet had asked him to do something difficult, he would have done it. Why not try just having a wash in the river?

Well, why not? The Gospel story is about healing too, and there again the focus is not so much on the healing as on the way the people being healed react. What are they expecting? What are they hoping for? What will happen afterwards? Where will they go? Sheep, if you put them in a river, go straight ahead to the other side and get out again. But the people in these stories change direction.

The river is the Derwent in Derbyshire, and the sheepwash is in Ashford-in-the-Water.

EJT

Readings next Sunday, 16th October, are for Pentecost 19: Genesis 32:22-3, 2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:5, Luke 18:1-8

Almighty God,
you have made us for yourself,
and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you:
pour your love into our hearts and draw us to yourself,
and so bring us at last to your heavenly city
where we shall see you face to face;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
