Sid Chow Tan, A Community History Project by No One Is Illegal

|
Sid Chow Tan
Powell Street Festival Society mourns the passing of community activist & long-time festival supporter Sid Chow Tan. Sid was someone you'd see at almost every community arts event, especially for Asian Canadian arts and culture, and at the Carnegie Community Centre, and at most rallies, protest marches, and speaking at City Council in support of community issues facing Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside. And he'd always be there with a camera in-hand and his sense of humour to make folks laugh during challenging times. His great art & activism will be missed by many.
Linda Uyehara Hoffman reflected on the loss of Sid. "I attended Sid's first [2019] presentation of My Art is Activism at the DTES Heart of the City Festival. It was so interesting – he spoke and showed videos, including clips from his Shaw Community TV show, and Sean Gunn was there with him and they had a great conversation. They talked about issues they'd supported, marches they'd gone on, and causes Sid had led. I knew Sid was active but had no idea how many issues he'd supported and campaigns he'd led. It was a small crowd so I was sorry that there weren't more people there to hear his stories. And I'd heard he was supposed to do another version of it at the upcoming Heart of the City Festival so it's sad that it won't be happening. I was glad I was at the first one to hear his stories. I will really miss seeing him."

Bingata Textiles: Preserving a Royal Tradition in Okinawa
Hosted by the Japan Society, New York City
October 18, 2022 4:00 PM Pacific (7:00 PM Eastern)
The bingata method of textile dyeing is a vibrant artistic tradition with a long history on Japan’s subtropical Okinawan islands. Originally reserved for the sumptuous garb of the royalty and ruling class of the Ryukyu Kingdom, these traditional hand-dyeing techniques are still being carried on by craftspeople in Okinawa today. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to Japan, this program explores the fascinating history, unique methods and current state of bingata with textile specialist Ginny Soenksen, and bingata craftsman Touma Chinen.
The first event in our multi-part Living Traditions webinar series this season.
Jin-me Yoon: About Time
October 15 2022 - March 5, 2023.
Opening Reception 8:00 PM Oct. 14 (for Gallery Members)
Vancouver Art Gallery
About Time presents Vancouver artist Jin-me Yoon’s significant artwork of the last decade. Frequently combining photography, video and installation, Yoon’s recent work is distinguished by a poetic, cinematic aesthetic—one that is deeply contemplative and undergirded by an examination of our position in the world as it is reflected in and shaped by ideas of history and memory, land and ocean.
Vancouver Art Gallery members can join for a special opening reception on October 14 from 8:00 - 10:00 PM. Hope to see you there!
