Warm Welcomes

Dear Parents,
I would be delighted to welcome you to our Open Day tomorrow, 11.00am to 1.00pm in the Nursery and Prep School, and 1.30pm to 4.30pm in the Senior School. Please come and have a look around the classes and meet the teachers who will be more than happy to speak to you. Please bring a friend along if you can who is not yet in the AKS family. Mr Harrow and I will speak at 12.30pm in the Prep Hall and the children will sing a few of their favourite songs to finish off the morning.

To celebrate the completion of this first half term, you are warmly invited to join the PTA Committee at their Halloween Party on Thursday at 5.30pm in the Prep School Hall, costumes welcomed!

Then on Friday, I would be very pleased to see you at our Harvest Festival in the Senior School Hall at 9.00am.

Head of Nursery and Preparatory School

Nursery

This week in Pre-School we have been exploring Autumn.

The children have been learning new vocabulary, discovering new objects, such as pinecones and conkers, and we have also been on our very own Autumn walk.

Nursery Team

Reception

It’s been a busy week of learning in Reception this week. After visiting the beach last week with the Lytham Parkview Rangers, we continued with the spiral theme using only natural resources such as leaves, conkers, acorns and sycamore keys. Good teamwork was evident with each pairing.

The children have also been showing great determination to improve their letter formation using the Read, Write, Inc. letter boards. Well done Reception!

Miss Allen and Mrs Walsh

Year 1

This week the Year 1 children have been looking at what is falling from the trees in our Outdoor Learning lessons and thinking about why this is happening now.

In their PSHE lessons, the children have been thinking about which things they find easy to do and which things need some determination, resilience and extra practice from us. They have used this information to set targets for themselves.

In their Maths lessons, the children have been working on ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ and have used our friend Charlie the Crocodile to help them draw the correct sign between two numbers.

Mrs Smith and Mrs Brooker
Year 2
This week, we have enjoyed making a lovely field of poppies in our Art work with Mrs Hine.

I was so impressed with the lovely writing completed by Year 2 on Remembrance, full of lots of facts and written so neatly.

In Science, we continue to think about being healthy and this week was all about exercise to promote healthy hearts and the importance of hygiene.

Mrs Bleasdale
Year 3

Another brilliant week in Year 3, with a big highlight for some children being the multi-skills festival on Tuesday afternoon, which saw the children complete various skill games to earn points for Team AKS, one of the teams finishing in 2nd place!

In Science, we have been exploring different types of rocks and their formations, as well as fossils and how they are formed over many years.

The children in Year 3 have been looking at the paintings of Gustav Klimt and copying some of the patterns he used in his work. The children saw he loved shades of orange, yellow, browns and gold and tried to use these shades in their own work.

Mrs Blinston and Mr Worthington

Year 4

It has been an absolute privilege and joy to see Year 4 look after each other this week. When the class went swimming, I suddenly heard all the class cheering a classmate on to encourage them and support them- great teamwork Year 4!

Year 4 have had a busy week of Sport with a rugby tournament and multi-sports afternoon. Every pupil in the class was included and worked hard.

In English, we have been studying fronted adverbials and have started writing our own 'Iron Man' story.

Mrs Briggs

Year 5
This week in Design Technology, Year 5 got to taste different brands of cereal bar; we considered the flavour, appearance, texture and smell of each product, giving it a score out of 10 and working out the class average. The next stage will be designing and baking our own products, using all this week's information to guide our choices - tasty!

In Maths, we have been solving two-step addition problems, including inverse operations and adding decimals.

Just for fun, we made some posters to decorate the new peri music rooms - this kept us busy during wet playtime and the results showed just how much we love Music!

Mrs Whitaker
Year 6
In History, the children have enjoyed learning all about Alfred the Great's early life and later as warrior before becoming King - well done to Lucy and Noah for their detailed fact files.

In Art, the children used light boxes to trace their self-portraits, then altered them to look like Julian Opie works of art - superb effort from Sadie and Archie for maintaining a steady hand and capturing facial expressions and features.

In Maths, the children have been learning long division and using the 'Chunking Method' to check their answers for accuracy - well done to Harry and Scarlett for mastering dividing by two digits!

Mr Avis and Mr Rice

Sports News

What a week it’s been for AKS Prep Sport, despite the wind and rain, we’ve managed to put out seven teams so far across netball, football and rugby.

Monday saw our very first all girls' U9 Rugby squad and U9 boys travel to Manchester Grammar School for the AJIS Rugby Festival. With 16 schools from around the Northwest taking part it was a great afternoon and has fuelled the hunger for more girls' rugby.

Tuesday saw a double whammy of Sport with the KS2 Yr3/4 Multi-Sports Festival held at AKS with two teams entered kicking off the day. In a fun action-packed afternoon, all children got to try new Sport challenges and work together as a team. Another great event from Lee and Wyre and Fylde School sports.

Mrs Cole and Ms Dixon's netball squads continued their impressive start to the season with a win for the A team and a draw for the B team vs Ansdell Primary School. In the football vs Ansdell, the boys put in their best efforts against challenging opposition.

Thursday saw our U10/11 mixed boys rugby squad visit Stockport Grammar School for a festival of rugby, which saw us up against Bolton School, St Mary’s College Liverpool and Bridgewater. In competitive spirit, the boys played extremely well and scored lots of tries throughout with individual and team performances particularly pleasing as we move forward with our rugby season.
