Collaborating Across the Corridor: Connecting Tri-City Medical Center with the Community

Aaron Byzak was born at Tri-City Medical Center, and now he has come full circle as the hospital’s Chief External Affairs Officer.

“This is the hospital that serves the healthcare needs of my family, my neighbors, my friends, and everyone in my community,” said Byzak. “If ever there was a place for me to bring what talents I might have, this is the place to do it.”

Byzak grew up in the Tri-City area, went to Carlsbad High School, did his undergraduate studies at MiraCosta College, and then went on to Chapman University and UC Irvine for his graduate studies. While attending school in Orange County and later working for the County Board of Supervisors and UC San Diego in the city of San Diego, he stayed in North County and commuted from here.

“I love everything about North County,” said Byzak. “There’s a neighborhood, small-town feel to North County, but it has matured dramatically over the years. We’ve got great collaboration across the 78 Corridor that doesn’t exist in a lot of places. The time of a person living and working in the exact same city – that’s not how it necessarily works anymore. They might live in my city but work in your city, and we need to collaborate on such things. I think that makes us really unique.”

Tri-City Meeting 21st Century Needs
Byzak joined the Tri-City Medical Center team in 2018, and since then, he has been working on improvements in the facility and organization. As CEAO, he is responsible for marketing, communications, government affairs, community engagement, patient transportation, and hospital interiors (or internal branding, as he calls it)...

(W)right on Communications wins two international awards

Congratulations to (W)right On Communications, who received two out of the four awards given at the International Public Relations Network (IPRN) during the organization’s 2022 Annual General Meeting & Conference in Cartagena, Colombia.

B2B Project of the Year: an education and outreach program for the San Diego Tourism Marketing District to help explain its role guiding San Diego’s tourism recovery, getting San Diegans back to work and restoring city tax collections from transient occupancy tax (TOT) on hotel room night stays.

Video of the Year: a creative take that started with the familiar worries that parents had about their kids’ psychological development during the pandemic, then flipped the script to reveal that the psychological threat was really to their aging parents who had even less socialization and stimulation.

Agencies from the U.S.A., European Union, Latin America, and Middle East presented their best work, and awards were determined by a vote of the agencies’ peers.

San Marcos named in Fortune's
'25 Best Places to Live for Families'

San Marcos was picked as one of the Fortune "25 Best Places to Live for Families" — especially for multi-generational families — out of a group of nearly 2,000 cities and towns across the country that had 25,000 to 750,000 residents. San Marcos, with a population of roughly 95,000, was ranked as No. 20. See a full list of the 25 cities here.

The ranking looked at communities that best served the “Sandwich Generation” — those raising children, caring for aging parents, and working at full-time jobs. The study considered city and community resources that helped multigenerational families, such as housing, high-quality schools with high graduation rates, affordable nearby colleges, high-quality nursing homes, assisted living communities, home health care services, and prompt access to good health care providers.

Oceanside named in global 7 Best Fall Travel Destinations for 2022

Average round-trip domestic airfares for September and October are down 37% to $238 — $142 below average summer round-trip domestic flights, and another 3%  percent below 2019 prices. This is the perfect time to visit somewhere exotic, one of which is in our own backyard, according to Hotel Expert Brandon Berkson.

Oceanside made the cut along with other such desirable destinations as Portland, Oregon; Barnard, Vermont; Bangkok, Thailand; Madeira, Portugal, Amsterdam; The Netherlands; and Providenciales, Turks & Caicos.

This is what Berkson had to say about Oceanside:
"Oceanside, California, is the SoCal beach town you need to have on your radar. It’s approachable and economical yet burgeoning and trendy. The stuffiness of other nearby beach towns, such as Laguna Beach and La Jolla, feel a lifetime away when here. The past five to seven years have seen the city go through a renaissance: more cute boutique hotels, inviting cocktail bars and farm-to-table restaurants seem to debut each day. If you’re a fan of surfing, then Oceanside is your kind of town."

In the past two years, the SDG&E has successfully undergrounded more than 70 miles of overhead infrastructure with nearly 50 additional miles of lines planned for this year. More than 430 miles of overhead power lines have been replaced with steel poles, and deployment of sectionalizing devices to create microgrids continues to increase pace. Read more...
Escondido incubator building could revive North County’s agriculture industry
A vacant, city-owned industrial building could become a hub for new businesses in the field of agricultural technology under a proposal now being explored by Escondido officials. The idea is to turn the empty building at 455 N. Quince St. into an incubator where researchers, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists could come together to hatch new companies serving North County’s agriculture industry. The 40,000 sqft building has been vacant since the city acquired it in 2010, according to Jennifer Schoeneck, Escondido’s economic development manager. Encinitas' Valentina selected in Forbes 'Best Places to Eat & Drink in San Diego Right Now'

"North County residents are thankful for this warm bistro and wine bar which also serves as an anchor of the local weekend brunch scene. There is a casually Spanish theme to the menu, with iberico croquets, paella and gambas al ajillo all stepping out as stars. But you can also enjoy a fantastic schnitzel here. Or savor French inspirations such as steak frites...And moules frites. So it’s hard to pin down a uniform identity on the place. Expect nothing more than crowd-pleasing small plates paired alongside a bevy of fun wines by the glass—packaged all with easy-going beach-ey vibes. Bonus points for being enthusiastically dog-friendly." ~ Forbes on Valentina

North County Post-Election Recap
Wednesday, November 9 from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM
Green Dragon Tavern & Museum
6115 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92011
The political landscape of North County is undergoing profound changes. All five of the cities along the SR 78 corridor are now carrying out “district only” City Council elections.

Redistricting at the state and national level has grouped North County communities together with areas of Southern Orange County and the City of San Diego. The numerical difference between Republicans and Democrats has never been closer and the “nationalization” of races is having a profound effect on both partisan and nonpartisan elections.

Join us the day after the November election to hear about what the results say about North County’s political future. Our guest that day will be John Nienstedt, one of San Diego's most experienced and knowledgeable public opinion researchers. John will talk about what the results mean.
