Fall 2022 Mental Health Training
offered by Student Wellness Services

Check out these Mental Health training sessions offered by Student Wellness Services, which are excellent opportunities to support a community of care at Queen’s.

On their website, you can also view details for their diverse Wellness (therapeutic, clinician-led) groups, visits from Oscar the therapy dog, their Peer Health Educators Recreational Run Club, and their Cooking/Food programs.

You can also get information about booking an appointment with a physical or mental health provider, an accessibility advisor or a health promotion specialist – including their new Peer Wellness Coaching program.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) | Student Wellness (queensu.ca)
Wednesday October 12, 2022 - Thursday October 13, 2022 - 8:30 am - 4:30 pm In-person

This 2-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Participants are strongly encouraged to complete either LivingWorks START and/or safeTALK prior to taking ASIST. All participants must attend both full days to receive a certificate of completion. Participants will also receive program materials including a workbook. COST: $60 for students and $85 for staff/faculty.

This session prepares participants to recognize people who are having thoughts of suicide by applying the TALK steps (Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe) and connect them to a suicide first-aid intervention caregiver. Powerful videos illustrate the importance of suicide alertness, while discussion and practice simulate learning. All participants must attend the full 3 hours to receive their certificate of completion. Participants will also receive program materials including a workbook. Cost is $15 for students and $25 for staff/faculty.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) | Student Wellness (queensu.ca)
Thursday October 27, 2022 -Friday October 28, 2022; 9:00 am - 4:00 pm - In-person

This 2-day in-person training aims to improve mental health literacy through greater depth and breadth of understanding of mental health issues. The purpose of MHFA is to teach participants how to best assist someone who is showing signs of a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. All participants must attend both full days to receive a certificate of completion. Participants will also receive program materials including a workbook. Cost is $50 for students and $75 for staff/faculty.

Identifying and Responding to Students in Distress | Student Wellness (queensu.ca)
Wednesday November 16, 2022 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm Online via Zoom (link sent upon registration)

This session helps students, staff and faculty learn how to recognize when students are struggling and how to respond with particular emphasis on immediate distress and/or crisis. Participants will gain practical tips on what to say and what to do in order to connect students with the appropriate resources available on-campus, in the community and/or online. Cost: Free

Call for Nominations

Have you been inspired by a Faculty Mentor or a Community Member?

The Ban Righ Foundation is seeking nominations for two awards:

Mentorship Award

Recognizes a current or retired Queen’s faculty member who identifies as a woman, and who demonstrates mentorship and knowledge sharing. She supports women students in achieving their goals and has been inspirational to a student or students.

Leadership Award

Recognizes a Kingston community member who identifies as a woman, and who has been an inspiration in the community. Her leadership builds capacity and fosters opportunities for others.

The deadline for nominations is November 18, 2022.

The SGPS is proud to offer a supplemental Health and Dental plan to all of our members.

Our plan includes not only enhanced travel coverage but starting in September 2022, students who are on the SGPS Health and Dental Plan will also have access to Conversation, a prepaid psychology service.

The SGPS Student Advisors are here to help you confidentially navigate many of the issues you may face as a graduate or professional student at Queen’s.

The Student Advisors provide advice, strategies for self-advocacy, referrals for these issues, and more. The Advisors provide services such as helping students find the answers to their questions, attending meetings alongside students, helping draft and edit delicate emails, providing individual advice, coaching and strategic planning, and connecting students to other resources when an issue exceeds their expertise or if there is another service that could better meet your needs.

If you are having a small problem, you don't ​need to wait until it becomes a very large problem. All correspondence with the Program (which is comprised of all the Advisors and the SGPS Executive Director) is entirely confidential. We cannot share your information with anyone unless we receive written permission from you.
