Neighbourhood Watch
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #573 - 04 October 2022

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

02 October, from NSW Police Force: Missing Man Found

A 60-year-old man missing from Hornsby has been located safe and well about 4pm today in The Hills District.
Police would like to extend their thanks to the local community and members of the public who assisted with the search.
30 September, from Ku-ring-gai command:
🛥 Look out for Kuring-Gai 790 on the waters this weekend - Here she is assisting the command in their duties yesterday. 👮‍♂️👮‍♀️
In sight of the long weekend approaching, here are some safe boating tips;
Plan your trip – check equipment, weather and vessel
Tell somebody where you are planning on boating and when you are expecting to return;
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is an offence. Random breath testing (RBT) and random drug testing (RDT) can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting;
Keep a proper lookout at all times;
Only carry as many people as are permitted on your boat – and make sure there are enough appropriately sized lifejackets for each person on board;
There are mandatory pieces of safety equipment you need on your vessel – make sure you know what they are and always carry every item;
Adhere to speed limits and other navigational signage;
Be aware of lifejacket requirements and ensure you wear the correct approved type for your vessel or water activity;
Know your limitations and the capabilities of your vessel – and stick to them;
Boat operators, or skippers, are responsible for the safety of their vessel and the people on board;
For more information head to site here.

02 October, from nhwq.org: From our NHW friends in Queensland.

Recent happenings involving a well-known telco company have been quite upsetting to individuals and businesses affected by a cyber attack issue. Not many of us fully understand the cyber world or even the consequences of what happens “out there”. However, it is important that we do our best to understand as much as we can.

One way we can do that is to follow the advice and information provided by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), an arm of the Australian Government Signals Directorate. The ACSC is reminding us that Cyber Security Awareness Month 2022 commences on 3 October 2022 and runs until 30 October 2022, with the overarching theme Have you been hacked? We could add to that question Would you know if you had been hacked?

Each week during October has a theme and you can follow those themes by visiting the ACSC website link in the information below.

02 October, from 9now.nine.com.au: 'People believe it's their insurer': Crash victims sound alarm on third party claims managers

When Melbourne mother Swati Desai called what she thought was her insurance company after she was involved in a minor car accident, she was impressed by how well her claim was handled.

They arranged to pick up her vehicle and even gave her a complimentary hire car.

But when Desai called AAMI again days later, she was shocked to hear they had no record of her claim.

02 October, Shared with permission from the Hornsby Heights Community group:
At some point last night hubby’s trailer was hit by a car out side 170 Somerville Rd. The trailer was on the road facing the other way and due to its weight must have been moved by a number of people up onto the nature strip. It was a hit and run not reported. There is plenty of debris on the road so some serious damage would have been done to the car. It would have taken some time for all this to happen so really hoping someone saw something, has dashcam or CCTV footage.
Thanks all ☺️

The daughter of a man accused of murdering her mother has told a jury of seeing him choke her nights before she went missing 40 years ago.
"My dad was angry and he threw his dinner plate and was shoving the food down her top," Brenda Boyd testified on Thursday.
"He was choking her and they were yelling.
"I remember holding on to her leg and yelling at my dad to stop."
She was giving evidence at the NSW Supreme Court trial of her father, former ambulance officer, John Douglas Bowie.
The 72-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murdering Roxlyn Bowie, who was 31 when she vanished from their Walgett home in northern NSW.
