Adding to yesterday's newsletter: FCRC update October 3, 2022.

Independent High Performance Culture Review

You are likely going to hear about this in the news, and if you get emails directly from Rowing Canada Aviron you likely would have seen this already: RCA sent out an email "Update to Our Community: Independent High Performance Culture Review" earlier today. The contents are on their website. https://rowingcanada.org/update-to-our-community-independent-high-performance-culture-review/

In it there is a link to the report: https://rowingcanada.org/uploads/2022/10/RCA-Independent-HP-Review_Report.pdf. It's not pretty, and I think the leader that SportsNet has on their webpage is probably very appropriate:

  • Editor's Note: The following story deals with sexual assault, and may be distressing for some readers.
  • If you or someone you know is in need of support, those in Canada can find province-specific centres, crisis lines and services here. For readers in America, a list of resources and references for survivors and their loved ones can be found here.
The report is 44 pages long, and clearly written. I would ask that you please read it so that you have the background to what happened. It doesn't have every detail in it but it will give you a good understanding of a) why Safe Sport training is really important not just for our coaches and board members, but also for athletes and volunteers themselves and b) what we need to do better.

If I could ask you to do 2 things: read the report, so when we come together at the RCA National Conference in the spring (late January?) we can reconcile ourselves with what's happened and heed the calls to move forward. As a friend of mine wrote this evening: "this is a path that must be walked". And secondly: take the Safe Sport module at the Coaches Association of Canada website. https://safesport.coach.ca/participants-training (you may have to create a free "locker" account if you don't already have one). It's an hour to an hour and a half long.

You might also consider developing a connection between your club and a current or retired National Team athlete, a coach or a support person: they come from across the country and likely there is someone from your community there. We aren't that big a sport as numbers go, and I think everyone who is part of the National Training Centre would appreciate knowing that they are part of a family that cares for them as people, and not just for the results of their last race.

And I realize that this is a bit of a jump, but I got a link to the photos that Jelly took at the Burnaby Lake 4k regatta right as I was sending the previous newsletter. https://www.row2k.com/gallery/gallery.cfm?action=gallery&dir=2022Fall/1003Burnaby&label=Burnaby%20Lake%20Small%20Boat%20Invite&hi=yes
