TNVR Help Needed!

(Trap/Neuter/Vaccinate/Return)

Tyson and Nazarena were recently rescued from a cat colony and are doing well, thanks to our incubator!
A feral cat who lives in the yard of a lady we know deposits her two newborn kittens on the lady’s doorstep. She has done this twice! The lady wouldn’t allow trapping in her yard before, but now she is reluctantly willing to allow us to trap…just not now.

The lady feeds the cats, but doesn’t want anything further to do with them. She calls us whenever she walks outside and finds newborn kittens.

Of the first litter, only one survived. This time, however, both Tyson and Nazarena are doing great! The difference? We now have an incubator! Here’s a picture of them curled up together in the incubator.

We are exploring ways to get this reluctant mom cat trapped. A woman who rescues Great Danes lives nearby and we may ask her for help. We will talk to the neighbors.

We definitely believe in reproductive freedom, for cats, too. This mom cat obviously doesn’t want a family. Yet she asks for help for her kittens rather than leave them to fate. We want to get her spayed so she doesn’t have to continue going through this cycle.

Often people who ask us for TNVR assistance pay for the surgeries for feral cats in their yard. I find this to be the kindest gesture! However, many people don’t have that ability, and this lady is in that circumstance. There are many cats in that area and we will probably catch several who need their vet bills paid. Please help if you can.

A Little Old Kitty Ditty

(A la Edward Gorey)

Naturi
I am an old woman.
I need an old cat.
A kitten would trip me,
And make me fall splat.

I'd break many bones,
And move to a home.
Where my kitten’s not welcome.
And I’d be all alone.

I’d soon waste away
Which would look really bad,
And my kitten and I
Would both be very sad.

Life without kitties
Is no life at all!
Give me an old puddy
Who won’t make me fall.

Check out these old kitties:
Naturi, 10
Bob, 8?
Spooky, 13?
Moxie, 10
Linus & Wooly, 10? (They’re BFFs.)

Or some not old but more sedate kitties:
Yuri, 3
Uschi, 2
Padme, 3
Luigi, 1

Some of these kitties can go to your home as Forever Foster cats, which means that we’ll pay all their expenses, forever. (We’ll always accept help, if you can afford it.)

The point of our Forever Foster program is to give a kitty a home and someone (or many someones) who loves him/her, and to give a companion to a person who cannot afford all the trappings of pet ownership. As an old woman who receives Social Security—but doesn’t yet rely on it, thank goodness—I understand how valuable that can be.

Scott and I had a vacation. We went to New Mexico and Colorado. Of course, TONS of staff members and volunteers took excellent care of the animals.

I hear stories of “failed rescues” and I am amazed at how sad that phrase is. A single person tries to care for all the animals she or he collects alone or with very little help, both physically and financially. And let’s not forget emotionally! It’s a recipe for failure. Those in charge don’t just burn out, they get fried to a frazzle! A neighbor calls the police, as they should. The person is convicted of animal cruelty, the very thing they are trying so desperately to prevent. Often one of their sentences is that they can never own an animal again. What a horrid tragedy!

Yet it’s the animals who really suffer. No matter what their circumstances were before being “rescued,” they are often no better off, maybe worse.

I am grateful that before and during the creation of Thundering Paws I was told by many people, “You CANNOT do this alone!” And “You CANNOT devote every waking minute to it!” And,  “You MUST seek financial and emotional help.”

We need respite, all of us. Directors, staff, volunteers—we all need a place and time to recover. This work is absolutely rewarding. It can also be very hard.

To our dedicated staff and volunteers, I salute you with a well deserved “Thank you!” for all you do. Be sure you take time to do nothing more than stare into space some times. It can be revitalizing.
