Welcome to our Monthly Highlights for September 2022 with a wrap-up of news from country programs and the secretariat of the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) shared on our online platforms that you may have missed during the previous month.
Program Updates
Regional acute febrile illness surveillance protocol adaptation meeting takes place in Dakar
The US CDC has extended funding support to AFENET to implement a project titled” West Africa strategy for Acute Febrile Illness (AFI) surveillance. The project will leverage on the existing country-based Acute Febrile Illness (AFI) surveillance activities in the West Africa region and to describe AFI etiologies, including its surveillance and laboratory capacity in place. Djibouti holds FETP implementation review workshop
In order to take stock of the implementation and to reflect on the sustainability of the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) in Djibouti, a review workshop with the stakeholders was organized jointly by AFENET and the National Institute of Public Health of Djibouti (INSPD) at the Ministry of Health on September 27, 2022. 20 graduate from second cohort of Chad frontline FETP
“We learned and practiced the core skills used in frontline surveillance, including the use of case definitions, disease screening and reporting, data synthesis using simple tables and graphs, case investigation, outbreak investigation and response, surveillance and evaluation as well as the analysis and interpretation of data for decision making in a first phase and in a second phase.” - Dr Rozi Tchiou, Chief District Physician of N'Djamena East. AFENET, US CDC support Ghana’s first evaluation of whether transmission of river blindness has been controlled
With technical support from AFENET and US CDC, the Ghana River Blindness Program is in the final stages to determine whether to stop mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin and declare triumph over the disease. Read more.
Mozambique FETP graduates promise  to improve service delivery
Speaking at the graduation ceremony in Nampula, the 12 frontline disease detectives noted that the knowledge acquired would go a long way towards improving their work when it comes to epidemiological surveillance management in their respective areas of operation. Read more.
US CDC and AFENET pilot DTP Booster Dose Modelling App in Uganda
The DTP Boost model is a first-of-its-kind model developed to jointly estimate the health and economic effects of introducing the WHO-recommended booster doses of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis containing vaccine (DTPcv). This application allows in-country subject matter experts (SMEs) to set initial conditions and calibrate stochastic compartment models without requiring any coding expertise or experience with non-linear systems. Somalia inaugurates third cohort of frontline field epidemiology training program
The Federal Ministry of Health is implementing the program with support from partners including the African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET), US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and the Public Health Agency of Sweden. Read more.
Liberia field epidemiology training program hosts Somalia FETP, US CDC teams
The Somali team visited to pick experiences, best practices, and lessons learned from the Liberia FETP in implementing the frontline program in the West African country for over five years. Meanwhile the purpose of the CDC team visit was to understand LFETP’s strengths and weaknesses and support the program on its path towards institutionalization. Liberia holds 3rd Emmet A. Dennis National Scientific Conference
The theme of the conference was “Maintaining Public Health during a Pandemic.” The first and second editions of the conference were held in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The conference is an annual event that provides the scientific community in Liberia the opportunity and platform to share research findings and deliberate on recent developments in public health and other related scientific disciplines. 15 graduate from sixth cohort of Liberia intermediate FETP
During nine months, the residents were equipped with requisite skills in applied field epidemiology, such as disease surveillance (surveillance data analysis and system evaluation), outbreak investigation and response, data quality and management, observational studies, and public health communication. Read more.
Rwanda trains more field epidemiologists as Cohort 9 of frontline training kicks off
The country launched the 9th cohort frontline training for its Field Epidemiology Training Program. This followed completion and graduation of 41 health care workers from the same program on 29 July 2022.  As in previous cohorts, trainees with different education backgrounds and Institutional affiliations were systematically selected and enrolled in the program. Kenya, Ethiopia, Ghana share lessons with Uganda which plans to introduce 2nd dose of measles-rubella vaccine
The Uganda Ministry of Health in collaboration with AFENET and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) hosted a 3-day (12-14 September) information sharing workshop to learn from other African countries including; Ethiopia, Ghana, and Kenya about their experiences with vaccination in the second year of life, particularly focusing on the introduction of the second dose of the Measles-Rubella vaccine. Participants deliberated on best practices, lessons learnt and challenges faced in delivering immunization services to children in their second year of life. AFENET extends technical support towards Malawi’s immunization and vaccine safety efforts
The African Field Epidemiology Network (AFENET) in partnership with the US CDC has extended technical support to the Malawi Ministry of Health Expanded Program on Immunization in the country’s effort to strengthen surveillance. During an August 2022 visit to Malawi, the AFENET and US CDC team’s support revolved around vaccine safety projects aimed at strengthening surveillance for adverse events following immunization, and surveillance of adverse events of specific interest.  Read more.
AFENET Corps of Disease Detectives: A conversation with Dr Ben Masiira
September 7 is World Field Epidemiology Day, a global movement to recognize and raise awareness of the vital role of field epidemiologists in protecting the health of populations, thus advancing global health security, and to advocate for increased investment in field epidemiology training, research, and professionals. As part of our commemorations for the day this year, we had an interview with Medical Epidemiologist Dr. Ben Masiira, who is the focal person/ coordinator for ACoDD activities at AFENET. Read more.
