A message from the Pastor...

Last Sunday we finished our worship series “Getting to Good.” I pray you have found hope in both realizing the commonness of issues you may struggle with and in the reminder of God’s constant presence with us in the middle of all we go through. This week we start our “Pathways to Generosity” campaign.

Each Monday, you should receive an email with daily devotions for the week. These are designed to help us continue to be aware of all that we have to be grateful for, along with simple acts to keep gratitude at the forefront of our minds. I hope you will join me in this daily practice.

This should be an enjoyable month together as we celebrate and respond to God’s generosity to us.

Peace,

In Memoriam

OM Fall Festival
This great family friendly event couldn't happen without our volunteers! There are opportunities to help with trunk-or-treat, games, set up, and clean up. Click here to see a complete list of volunteer opportunities.
Angel Tree Callers
One in 28 children across the U.S. has a Mom or Dad behind bars. This year Old Mission will provide Christmas gifts for nearly 200 children in the region, and this process requires volunteers from our congregation.  We are in need of volunteers, beginning in two weeks' time, to help call caregivers, sort and organize gifts, and deliver gifts to local families.  Please contact Anne Cusser - 913.593.1367 or acusser81@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with this ministry.  Thank you and God Bless!
Shawnee Indian Mission Fall Festival
Volunteers are needed for the Shawnee Indian Mission Fall Festival. Specific help is needed for set up on Thursday & Friday (10/6 & 10/7), event volunteers for Saturday 10/8, and take down volunteers for Sunday 10/9.  The Fall Festival wouldn't happen without volunteers!  If you're interested sign up here.

Food Donations Needed
Old Mission’s food collection for the Roeland Park Food Pantry continues. Recently they have been giving out 150 grocery bags of food on the 1st and 3rd (and 5th if there is one) Fridays of the month, and each family is given a $10 gift card.

Please consider donating pasta, pasta sauce, cereal and canned meat. You can also choose to donate a $10 Aldi gift card so families can purchase milk, bread and other needed items. Please bring gift cards to the church office and place nonperishables in the large container at the church’s front door. Thank you,

Missions Committee

All Church Spiritual Retreat

Saturday, October 15 from 9:00 am-12:30pm at Old Mission

Life can be busy, hectic and it just seems like we have been carrying around an enormous amount of grief from the last two years. What if there were some spiritual practices that could help? What if there was a way you could feel less anxious, more present, right here and right now?

Join us on Saturday, October 15 from 9:00-12:30, for a time to be refreshed, and reminded that God is very present in the here and now. Dr. Amy Oden will lead us in spiritual practices that we can use in our daily lives. This is a time to connect with God and with each other. We will start the morning off with a light breakfast and a chance to mingle. Then, we will end our time together with lunch.

Dr. Amy G. Oden is a Professor of Early Church History and Spirituality at St. Paul School of Theology. She is also a spiritual director, championing people as they listen for God in their day-to-day life. Amy was born and raised in Oklahoma and is the author of several books. She received her PH.D. In Religious Studies from Southern Methodist University.

Sign up here. Questions? Contact Rev. Karen Nyhart, karen@oldmission.org. Cost: $20.00 per person, childcare is available.

Good Faith Network Community Conversations
The Good Faith Network Community Conversations is our annual community-wide listening process that helps us surface the issues we need to address in Johnson County. Come spend 90 minutes with us and join the conversation!

In our first year we have researched concrete solutions for mental health and homelessness in Johnson County. We are working with the county commissioners to implement those solutions. As we continue this process, we are starting the conversations again as to what other problems we might tackle in Johnson County.

Here at Old Mission we will be holding several Community Conversations. We would love to hear of your concerns and invite you to be a part of this Justice Network. Call or email Pastor Debbie, debbie@oldmission.org, 913.262.1040, if you would like to participate in one of these conversations.

  • 10/8/22 (Sat) 6:30- 8 p.m. - Led by Scott Long (held at his home)
  • 10/12/22 (Wed) 1:30- 3p.m. – Led by Debbie Hull (held at the church)
Fall Festival
Come one, come all to our annual Fall Festival!  There will be parking lot games, carnival games and trunk-or-treat!  Wear your costume -nothing too spooky- and join us on Sunday, October 23, 4-6pm in the west parking lot.
Free Cleaning Wipes
A member of our congregation generously donated 72 boxes of cleaning wipes.  (not sanitation wipes). They are wonderful for cleaning up small messes. If you would like some for your school, work, or home, talk to Pastor Debbie or just go downstairs to the Fellowship Hall Stage area and take what you need. You can take one bottle or several boxes!
Crop Walk October 8

The ongoing war in Ukraine, on top of the pandemic and other disasters is causing a global food crisis. Millions are on the brink of famine. The CROP Hunger Walk and the funds that are raised will feed the hungry through Church World Service. When you join this movement to raise funds and donate, these gifts will provide life-saving support like emergency food along with the seeds, tools and programs that will help families feed themselves in the future.

The Kansas City/Heart of America CROP Hunger Walk is Saturday, October 8, at 10:00am, at Central United Methodist Church, 5144 Oak Street, Kansas City, MO.  Check in begins at 9:30 am.

Recruit a team of family, friends and Old Mission Church members to join this year’s CROP Hunger Walk. Every step and every donation helps! You may register online.

Donations can be made at the walk, online, or sent to the HOA CROP Treasurer:
