Hi <<First Name>>! Welcome to AP's November newsletter

This past month, the international attention has been directed to COP27, the UN climate change conference held this year in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt - for the first time in six years outside of Europe. The international meeting concluded with an agreement on a loss and damage fund for vulnerable countries hit by climate disasters but, thanks to civil society's mobilization, it also shed light on the host country's situation of human rights abuses affecting activists such as Alaa Abd el-Fattah. The last day of COP27 has been the opening day of the World Cup 2022, which is taking place in Qatar under harsh criticisms. Remaining in the region, the Turkish government accused the PKK of bombing Istanbul causing casualties and injuries, and in response launched air strikes on Kurdish targets in Iraq and Syria.

In the meantime, in November AP launched a webinar for schools on conflict prevention, building on the work done for the Bologna Peacebuilding Forum 2022. In AP's contribution fo the HuffPost this month, Valentina Bartolucci (associate) reflects on the inexplicable and contradictory fascination for war. In this newsletter you will also find an insight newly translated into Italian of the blog, updates on AP's activities in Zanzibar and some reading suggestions

Is it possible to avoid conflicts? Prevention of armed conflicts and promotion of peace from WWII to Ukraine

On Tuesday, 13 November (9.00am to 10.00am CET), AP will hold a webinar for high school classes to talk about conflict prevention and the different ways to promote peace in the current historical context.
The prevention of violent conflicts is a key element of international peace and security and AP dedicated increasing attention to the topic, to the extent that it has been the focus of the 2022 Bologna Peacebuilding Forum.
The webinar aims at raising awareness on themes of civic education and peacebuilding among high school students, reflecting on conflict prevention in a historical perspective and promoting a critical debate on how to build peace today. The webinar will be in Italian and will cover the definition and evolution in history of conflict prevention; a focus on Ukraine; neutral conflict and escalation to violent conflicts; and peace initiatives.

The incredible (and absurd) fascination for war

By Valentina Bartolucci, AP's associate

The fascination for war has accompanied humanity since ancient times. War was considered the moment in which peoples demonstrate their value. However, in the 20th century, from being a glorifying act, war became an alienating experience and a collective trauma.

Strengthening Community Peace Mechanisms in Zanzibar

In November AP lead two outcome harvesting workshops in Zanzibar aimed at reinforcing conflict transformation mechanisms to de-escalate tensions and support a peaceful post-election context in the country.

Tanzania and Zanzibar are historically regarded as politically stable compared to other countries in East Africa. Yet, in the last decade the country has experienced occasinal violent extremist incidents. This increased incidence of violent conflicts has been linked to various political, social and economic grievances.
Against this backdrop, the project Dumisha Amani Zanzibar, funded by the European Commission and led by Search for Common Ground, intended to strengthen alternative peacebuilding mechanisms at the community level to de-escalate and peacefully resolve conflicts in Zanzibar.
