We did something fun and slightly unusual yesterday—we hosted 15 students from Hamilton College in Clinton for a cheese and gelato tasting! Hamilton’s Slow Food chapter has been a tremendous supporter of ours over the years and we really enjoy having the kids visit and unwind off campus for a few hours.

We prepared a space in our make room, right in the center of our cheese plant, and invited the students to sample five different cheeses—fresh honey-rosemary goat cheese, Kuyahoora Crème Cheese, Jake’s Gouda, baked feta with tomatoes and kalamata olives (feta sto fourno), and our Duvet Blanc. We offered pairings of tart green apples, red pepper jam, apricot gelée, quince jelly, and grapes, with plenty of crusty bread and crackers for serving.

Before…

We rounded out the tasting with a scoop each of cow’s milk apple crisp gelato and a goat’s milk Madagascar bourbon vanilla caprilato.

Hosting our tastings in the middle of our make room mean participants must wear a hair net and booties over their shoes, but it also means a real-life glimpse into the inner workings of our cheese plant. Everyone had ample time to ask questions and talk shop. We even got a plug in for the Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund and internship opportunities for next summer.

During!

Would you enjoy a cheese tasting in our cheese plant? Send us an email and we’ll plan something special for you and your group, perfect for the holidays or as a gift for a winter outing!

The Week Ahead

We processed our very last batch of chickens for the 2022 season. Yay! Supplies will be very short this winter until we start up again in the spring.

Place your orders every week at Local Foods Mohawk Valley. Order by midnight on Sunday for pickup on Tuesday evening. Our online store is open for home delivery (Wednesday delivery only) and our farm store is always open daily, 10am-6pm.

Thank you, as always. If there is anything we can do for you, please let us know!
