Connecting People, Ideas, and Resources
Nonprofit News for October/November

Welcome to Nonprofit Connection's bi-monthly newsletter of timely information
All of this information plus the Resources you need are available on our Website and updated regularly on our Facebook Page and LinkedIn Page.
In this issue:
  • Summary of Events, Workshops, and Trainings from our Nonprofit Calendar for October and beyond, including Halloween and Dia de los Muertos
  • Celebrating Nonprofits in the news: "How Rise Together Became a Model for Philanthropic Groups BIPOC-led organizations" and "Three school districts join Live Oak's Cradle to Career program"
10 Second Quiz
Answer one question:

Are your organizations' board meetings
open to all employees?
Your opinion matters.* Our insights can turn into influence. Anonymous, fast, and important! Results will appear in an upcoming newsletter.

Thanks to all who took ten seconds
to answer last month's question:
Have you seriously considered leaving your
nonprofit job for better pay/benefits?

82% of respondents said "yes" - only 18% said "no"
*A sample of the many responses:
  • “Most nonprofits do not offer retirement…a huge deterrent as nonprofit workers have no pension to rely on…”
  • “I have in the past left one nonprofit for another. Now…I seriously consider moving out of nonprofit altogether for better pay and benefits.”
  • “I can make the same amount of money working at Target and having no worries whatsoever as I do at a very stressful nonprofit. That's significant!”
  • “Even MacDonald's is starting people above $16/hr with full benefits these days.”
  • “I love my work but not the long hours and no pay.”
This long-standing NPO challenge affects not only morale and retention but can deter caring, qualified individuals and particularly young people from pursuing careers in our NPOs.

For NPO Managers and Board Members to consider: What are you doing - or could be doing - in your own NPO to prioritize employee pay, benefits, and retirement security?

*Answering the monthly question enters you into a random drawing every quarter for a local $25 Verve Gift Card! Congratulations Ileana Ortega Brunetti

Together we can create a more
equitable Santa Cruz County

"We are a multicultural and intergenerational
coalition of 32 members, led by People of Color, working collaboratively to advance
racial equity in Santa Cruz County."
Rise Together shows us a path toward racial equity that is joyful and inclusive with actions that our whole community can take as we build a Santa Cruz County where everyone can thrive. Watch our founders' video to learn more.

How Rise Together Became a Model for Philanthropic Groups
BIPOC-led organizations awarded $400K in new grants

"What began as a way to bring representation to local philanthropy became a movement, as the network of leaders continued supporting one another’s vision of racial equity, working together to ensure its success in a structure that ensured BIPOC leaders had decision-making power over the process.

Ultimately, Rise Together became a model for how philanthropy can be done, with decisions around funding BIPOC-led communities and organizations being led by members of the communities themselves." Read more from Liza Monroy of the GoodTimes and the Guest Commentary | Rising together toward shared prosperity in the the Sentinel. More information at www.risetogetherscc.org.

Three school districts join
Live Oak's Cradle to Career program

Celebrating the expansion of the program into
Santa Cruz City Schools, San Lorenzo Valley
Unified and Soquel Union
school districts
“We are so excited to announce that we have joined forces with United Way of Santa Cruz County, which will serve as both a fiscal agent and project partner to support C2C’s expansion at a critical point in the pandemic recovery process for children and families,” said the program’s director Allison Guevara

"According to organizers, the goal embedded throughout Cradle to Career is that local families most impacted by long-standing systemic inequities need to have a voice and share power in developing priorities and policy solutions."  Read more from the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Our Nonprofit Members believe in the power of collaboration and resource sharing to strengthen everyone’s ability to meet the challenges of providing excellent programs and services to our community. Membership dues will be increasing January 1, 2023.
