OCTOBER 2022

Happy October Friends!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I would be remiss if I did not share my personal story with you. I began 2018 with a diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) after finding a lump during a self-breast exam. I just had a negative mammogram only 5 months prior. If I had not been performing regular self-breast exams, the lump could have gone undetected for another 6+ months until my next scheduled mammogram.

Did you know that Black women experience TNBC at a far higher rate than other groups? Until I was a patient myself, I didn’t realize different types of breast cancers existed. TNBC requires a pretty aggressive treatment due to the high rate of recurrence.

For me, my treatment was successful. I am extraordinarily thankful and feel completely blessed to be here almost 5 years later and still cancer free. Praise God!

Ladies, please check your breasts at least once a month. I will beat this drum every year in October because it is so important. I was blessed to have found the lump by simply doing my monthly self-breast exam. Be persistent about checking yourself out and getting those mammograms!

What will you say? What should you say? Your thoughts race as you rehearse something heartfelt.

If it’s the first time you’ve had a coworker diagnosed with cancer, it’s probably more difficult. Even worse, what you may think of as a natural and helpful question or comment may not be helpful at all — and may actually be hurtful.  READ MORE >>>
