New NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy takes effect in January 2023

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is prioritizing data management and sharing through an updated policy that takes effect on Jan. 25, 2023. NIH has indicated that the changes to the policy are intended to “advance the rigor and reproducibility” and “promote public trust in research.” After Jan. 25, applications for NIH funding are required to include a data management and sharing plan. If funded, researchers are required to comply with the approved plan. If the plan is not followed, it may affect future funding opportunities for the researcher.

The new policy lays out expectations for applicants to write a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP), which is similar in scope and theme to data management plans required by some academic journals and other funding agencies, such as the National Science Foundation. The DMSP should include management planning throughout the research process from data generation or collection through analysis and research work, to final curation and sharing. The NIH further emphasizes the importance of managing data of research participants. Privacy and confidentiality of participant data should be carefully considered.

The NIH webpage on Scientific Data Sharing provides an overview of the new policy and is designed to help applicants create their Data Management and Sharing Plan. The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press has a Research Data Steering Group and a Data Services Librarian who can help navigate development of a Data Management and Sharing Plan for funding applications. You can reach this group in order to get support or schedule a consultation by emailing lib-rdsg@udel.edu.

Join this interactive program and develop a commercialization plan for your innovation

Whether you are considering building a company to launch your innovation or looking for a licensing opportunity, consider joining the 2023 Winter iDEa Lab Cohort. This Delaware Small Business Development Center (SBDC) training utilizes the “So What? Who Cares? Why You?” methodology, an internationally approved process used by the European Space Agency, the Air Force Research Lab, and multinational corporations as a way to vet a concept and initiate a new product or business. The methodology transcends traditional lectures and customer discovery methods — we immerse teams in hands-on workshops that emphasize "learning-by-doing" in easy steps. To get a sneak peek of the methodology we use, check out this video on YouTube!

The iDEa Lab is also well suited to assist the development of competitive SBIR/STTR proposals due to its focus on combining the business and technical aspects of the innovation into a practicable overview of the product application.

Learning is accomplished through the online WKI portal with a mandatory two-hour workshop held once per week. Dates and times will be determined based on the availability of selected cohort teams. The no cost Winter Cohort is expected to start sometime in January 2023 and run for six to eight weeks.
