A message from the Pastor...

Two important events are coming up related to Old Mission’s future.
The first is this Sunday. We will be turning in our estimate of giving cards during worship this week. If you did not receive a card for some reason, we will have more available for you on Sunday. I am excited for the mission and ministry that we will be able to accomplish together next year, in part through your faithful giving, as we continue the path of discipleship.

The second important event is in two weeks. I will be in Houston the first week of November as one of the Great Plains Conference delegates for our Jurisdictional Conference. The most significant action at this conference is the election of bishops, and there is a strong possibility that one of those elected will become our bishop beginning January 1st.

When I return, I will share an update on the United Methodist Church with you. I’ll share some information about our incoming bishop and also share about what is ahead for Old Mission in light of the division in our denomination. I have my own bias but I will try to present information in as fair a way as possible, as well as allow time for questions that you may have. For your convenience, the presentation and conversation will happen twice – Sunday November 6th at 5:00 in-person in Fellowship Hall and Monday, November 7th via Zoom. This will be geared specifically towards Old Mission but if you have friends who are United Methodist you are welcome to invite them and I will attempt to record the zoom presentation so that it can be viewed at a later time.

If you are not able to come to one of these, here’s the bottom line: Old Mission United Methodist Church has a mission to fulfill – to make a difference by loving God and loving people. We’re going to keep doing that for years to come because the world needs to know the Good News of God’s love through Jesus Christ.

Peace,

Sympathies
Our deepest sympathy to Jan Gephardt and family on the death of her father, Gene Sherrell.

Charge Conference
Our annual Charge Conference will be held THIS Thursday, October 27 at 6:30 pm. A light supper will be served. RSVP to gay@oldmission.org or 913.262.1040.

Fall Festival Thanks!
A huge heart-felt thank you to all who helped to make our Fall Festival so successful.  We had 13 families provide their trunks for Truck or Treat.  All were amazing and when the voting was over, we had our top three:
  • 1st  place – The Szczesnys’s with their “KFC” trunk
  • 2nd place – The Doane’s with their “Chief Tailgate”  They had the game on T.V.  and handed out hotdogs and chips
  • 3rd place – The Steeles with their version of Hocus Pocus!
A Big thanks also goes to our amazing youth and their families.  They came and helped set up, run, and take down all the games.  This event could not happen without them.

And finally thank you to the Children’s Ministry team who planned this amazing event.  It was well attended and all the kids went home happy!   We are looking forward to next years event!

Pathways to Generosity Prayer Walk

Join Pastor Nancy on Saturday, October 29 at 10:00 am, or Sunday, during the 9:45 connect hour, for a 30 minute, moderately paced prayer walk around the Fairway neighborhood. As we walk and spend time in fellowship, we will pray for the well-being of  the community, businesses and schools, asking God how we at Old Mission can make a difference in our future together. We will meet in the north parking lot.

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.  --Jeremiah 29:11

OM Christmas

Back by popular demand for the first time since 2019, it’s Old Mission Christmas on December 18 at 8:45 and 10:30am.

In this beautiful service, musicians of all ages come together for a Christmas worship celebration we call, Old Mission Christmas. Every ensemble representing a variety of musical styles and ability levels is involved. So, if you sing or play an instrument, there’s a place for you! Sign up at oldmission.org. Questions? Email Karen Eisele, karene@oldmission.org

Angel Tree Gifts
One in 28 children across the U.S. has a Mom or Dad behind bars. This year Old Mission will provide Christmas gifts for nearly 200 children in the region, and this process requires volunteers from our congregation. We are in need of volunteers to deliver gifts to local families. in the coming weeks. Please contact Anne Cusser - 913.593.1367 or acusser81@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with this ministry.  Thank you and God Bless!

Food Donations Needed
Old Mission’s food collection for the Roeland Park Food Pantry continues. Recently they have been giving out 150 grocery bags of food on the 1st and 3rd (and 5th if there is one) Fridays of the month, and each family is given a $10 gift card.

Please consider donating pasta, pasta sauce, cereal and canned meat. You can also choose to donate a $10 Aldi gift card so families can purchase milk, bread and other needed items. Please bring gift cards to the church office and place nonperishables in the large container at the church’s front door. Thank you,

Missions Committee
