Hello, friends! Maybe giving everyone microphone was a bad idea. The concept of free speech is something we've been collectively wrestling with forever, but it's been front and center Online™ this year as billionaire manchild Elon Musk decided he would buy Twitter. Never mind, he isn't. Oh wait, he is!
The free exchange of ideas is important, but not all ideas deserve to be heard. We can't have a free exchange of ideas when people are bullied, harassed, and hate-speeched into not participating.
I haven't given it much consideration until recently, but perhaps the biggest shift in my political leanings over the years has been a change from being concerned about my rights to being concerned about our rights. A societal concept of rights and benefits is a lot harder to describe than individual rights. But that doesn't make it unimportant. At some point, we need to recognize that we live in a society.
