Minister’s Musings:

Do any of these sound familiar?
  • One of the blessings of age is to learn not to part on a note of sharpness, to treasure the moments spent with those we love, and to make them whenever possible good to remember, for time is short. (Eleanor Roosevelt) GRATEFUL
  • This is a wonderful day, I’ve never seen it before. (Maya Angelou) BLESSING
  • Don’t be afraid, my love is stronger. My love is stronger than your fear (MV90) UNAFRAID
  • The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, to your community around you, to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning. (Mitch Albom) DEVOTED
These are the four quotations used during the Stewardship campaign. Perhaps in the months to come when all the Sunday services have mixed together in your mind (or you’ve forgotten them altogether) these quotations will still help you stop and think about what it means to be grateful, to be a blessing and receive a blessing, to be unafraid to stand in your faith, and to be devoted to God and to each other.

I have another quotation for you. It is stuck with tape beside the light switch in my church office so I see it every time I leave. It says (and I don’t know who wrote it): THE MOST COURAGEOUS THING WE CAN DO IS STAND IN THE LIGHT AND BE SEEN AS WHO WE ARE.

I pray this past month has helped us all find the courage and confidence to stand in our light because we have been reminded, or learned for the first time, what a solid foundation Highlands is in our lives and the community; and what a solid foundation it offers us to go and spread the love of God in this world.

Julie.

Hello Highlands folks,

Highlands feels like home to me and that is a big reason why I volunteer my time and I pledge each year to support the church.

Whether I am there in person or participating online, I feel that people care about me and I am challenged to deepen my connection with God. The music lifts me up, the children running around in bare feet make me smile, and having opportunities to donate to programs locally and around the world help me to make a difference.

During this Stewardship season as we consider what Highlands means to us, I hope you can spend some time to consider how being part of this community enriches your life.

Sincerely,
Robin Rivers
Highlands member for 25 years.

Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity

Five decades ago, The Limits to Growth shocked the world by showing that population and industrial growth were pushing humanity towards a cliff. Today the world recognizes that we are now at the cliff edge: Earth has crossed multiple planetary boundaries while widespread inequality is causing deep instabilities in societies. There seems to be no way out.

Earth For All is a survival guide to help steer humanity away from ecological and social catastrophe. A leading group of scientists and economists from around the world present five extraordinary turnarounds to achieve prosperity for all within planetary limits in a single generation:
• Poverty Turnaround-- Saying Goodbye to Poverty
• Inequality Turnaround: "Sharing the Dividends"
• Empowerment Turnaround: Achieving Gender Equity
• Food Turnaround: Making the  Food System Healthy
• Energy Turnaround: "Electrifying Everything"
• Economic Turnaround: From "Winner Take All" Capitalism to Earth4All Economies

Earth For All is available in our church library, and soon to be available in DNV libraries. Its authors are: Sandrine Dixson-Declève, Owen Gaffney, Jayati Ghosh, Jørgen Randers, Johan Rockström, Per Espen Stocknes.
See Earth4All website here.
