The Power of Storytelling

In E.B. White’s classic children’s novel Charlotte’s Web, Charlotte saves Wilbur’s life by cleverly weaving a story about him into her web. Stories are powerful and an ideal way to engage an audience — because humans use stories to make sense of the world. In marketing communications, you can create a story map for your customers to follow. Start with your customer, the story’s hero, facing a challenge. By providing an essential product or service at just the right time, you serve as a guide to help the customer overcome their problem and find success. When a customer’s journey (and story) end on a happy note, you reap the rewards.

Case studies can use the same storytelling map and techniques to highlight positive results derived from successful products and services. Keep reading to learn 10 ways to use storytelling elements to ensure your case studies are crisp, concise, and compelling. This blog kicks off a Cobalt-60 blog series on how to use narrative-focused marketing communications, from white papers to ads to social media, to gain a competitive advantage.

Did You Know?
The case study, or case history — an in-depth examination of a particular case in a real-world context — was originally used in clinical medicine and psychology as a descriptive research approach. The case study method is believed to have been introduced by Frederic Le Play as early as 1829. In marketing, case studies are commonly used as social proof to persuade potential customers that a process, product, or service can solve a problem.
