Elysian Heights Community,

During this month of festivities we are reaching out to you in celebration of Filipino American History Month. We recognize this time of commemoration and take joy in the opportunity to celebrate the history, culture and contributions of Filipino-Americans. Any time we can celebrate and learn from the lives of others is a great opportunity and this is one small way we can contribute.

History: We celebrate Filipino American History Month in October as it commemorates the first time Filipinos first arrived in the Continental United States when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18th, 1597--this was at a time when the Philippines were still considered a Spanish colony. In 1898, Spain ceased The Philippines to the U.S. until 1946 when the Philippines took back their independence--after many attempts--after WWII.

In 2009, the California State Assembly passed Senator Leland Yee’s resolution to formally recognize the month. Later that year congress passed a similar resolution on the federal level.

There are 4.3 million people with Filipino heritage living in the US making Filipinos one of the largest ethnic groups in the country.
