“A sombre sometimes explosive exploration of percussion set to the tense groove of civil unrest.” -- Limelight Magazine
Premiering at the 2021 Sydney Festival "Disruption! The Voice of Drums" germinated in the political, environmental and ecological turmoil of recent years. Our chants and rhythms, some of which appear on the album, were heard on the streets when we could gather. In our isolation we beat out mass pot & pan improvisations across the globe. Drums, the abiding visceral centre for communal rituals, ceremonies and protest, spoke what we couldn’t say or had been saying to deaf ears. Drums have the capacity to alter brainwaves. We could do with more of that.
Sydney’s Earshift Music has released 60 albums to date, representing the diverse cultural bleed of Australia in the next generation of jazz musicians. Founded in 2009 and headed by saxophonist Jeremy Rose, another 9 albums are on the books up to March 2023, including The Vampires featuring The Necks pianist Chris Abrahams.
On 14 October it released "Disruption! The Voice of Drums", powered by the extraordinary Simon Barker and Chloe Kim solo drumsets. Jeremy Rose leads the Earshift Orchestra, in lament and revival.
Composer credits are shared between Rose, Simon Barker and Chloe Kim. Working out from previously released solo pieces by Barker and Kim, Rose re-thought his compositional approach for the Orchestra, usually dictated by harmony and melody, to create layers where instruments come in and out of focus, and on which the drum are foregrounded.
