CLOSER Discovery team at EDDI22
The CLOSER Discovery team will head to Paris next month to attend the 2022 European DDI conference. Jon Johnson, Hayley Mills and Becky Oldroyd will be busy throughout the four-day event running a workshop on questionnaires, presenting papers on documenting validated questionnaires and Extract2DDI, as well as a poster on standardised scales.

50 years of census data - virtual roundtable
The 2022 UKCenLS Conference brought together the Office for National Statistics Longitudinal Study (ONS LS) for England and Wales, the Northern Ireland Longitudinal Study (NILS) and the Scottish Longitudinal Study (SLS), all based on the census, to explore their research power. CeLSIUS are now organising a follow-on roundtable event for those who were not able to attend the conference in person. Participants will be invited to view the conference presentations before joining their discussion on ‘What would researchers like to do with 2021 Census data?’. COVID-19 and mental health
A new collaborative paper from the COVID-19 Longitudinal Health and Wellbeing Study has investigated whether people experience poorer mental health after having symptoms of COVID-19. The research, published by The Lancet, examined data from over 50,000 adult participants from 11 UK longitudinal population studies.

How have changes to work during lockdown affected the health of the middle-aged?
New longitudinal research using data from the Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) study suggests older workers who experienced switching to home working, job loss or poorer pre-pandemic socioeconomic position during lockdown were more likely to experience a worsening of their mental health and self-rated health.

Five hours' sleep a night linked with multimorbidity
New research, using longitudinal data from Whitehall II, suggests getting less than five hours of sleep a night in mid-to-late life could be linked to an increased risk of developing at least two chronic diseases.

Eliminating sexual violence could reduce teenage mental ill health
Researchers using Millennium Cohort Study data say the prevalence of serious mental health problems among 17-year-olds could drop by as much as 16.8% for girls and 8.4% for boys if they were not subjected to sexual violence. Read more on the CLS website
Understanding Society – new code creator
To help users get started with their research Understanding Society have built a Stata code creator as part of the variable search area on their website. Running the code enables users to extract data from the main end user licence Understanding Society dataset to produce a simple flat data file. To use the code creator, save the variables you are interested in, then click on the 'build data file' link to generate your Stata code. Your code is available immediately on the website and can be emailed to you. The code will allow you to create your own data file containing your chosen variables, plus a handy set of commonly used sociodemographic variables and cross-sectional and longitudinal weights. You can find the code creator on the main survey variables in the dataset documentation area of the Understanding Society website.
