TRAILS Parent Resources:

Last week, we wrapped up Unit 1 for our TRAILS program. Students have been learning to develop skills for self-awareness, in particular noticing and naming their thoughts and feelings. This week we will begin Unit 2, where students will begin lessons on developing self-management, which includes strategies for managing strong thoughts and feelings. These strategies help students gain more control over their behavior choices.

The following topic will be covered in this unit:

Acting opposite: Each of our emotions serves a purpose and is accompanied by an impulse to act. For example, when we feel fearful, we may have the urge to hide; when we feel sad, we may want to withdraw; and when we feel angry, we may want to attack. To reduce the intensity of our emotions or keep the situation from getting worse, we can identify the emotion we are experiencing and the associated action urge, and then choose the opposite behavior instead.

To strengthen this lesson, try this activity with your student at home:
If you notice your child is avoiding something important, such as schoolwork, talking to adults or peers, etc., encourage them to act opposite by facing their fears. If you notice your student has been spending a lot of time on their phone or hasn’t been interacting with others, encourage them to act opposite by going outside or reaching out to a friend.

Current COVID-19 Guidance

If your child tests positive for COVID-19, 5 days of isolation is recommended. Individuals may return any time during days 6-10 if their symptoms are largely resolved and fever-free without the use of medication. It is also recommended that a mask be worn on days 6-10. Each school is required to report all communicable diseases to the Kent County Health Department (KCHD). If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please notify your building administrator. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe!

Students are issued “Way to Go” cards for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility or Personal Best by doing the right thing!  As students receive these cards, they are placed in the container located in the Main Office. Every Friday, names are drawn and announced during the afternoon announcements.  Each student selected, has the opportunity to pick a prize from the prize basket simply as a way to say “Thanks, we appreciate and recognize you!”

Our winners this week are:
Jacob McVay, 6th Grade
Sophia Brown, 7th Grade
Audrey Schmidt, 7th Grade
Sydney Steiner, 8th Grade

The next Student Council meeting is Monday, October 31st in room 206.  Any student is welcome to attend and join the Student Council.

Below is a link to complete the Volunteer Consent form for the upcoming 2022-2023 school year.  Please note this form must be completed at least 24 hours prior to coming in to work with students.  Please call the middle school office, 616-235-7551, to confirm your form submission.

2022-2023 Volunteer Consent Form

Middle School Ski Club

The East Grand Rapids Middle School would like to invite all students to join an informal ski club at Cannonsburg for the winter of 2022-2023.  Students and ALL family members have the opportunity to purchase discounted lift tickets in the form of a punch card. The cards have other benefits as well!  You may use these tickets ANY time, but we will also organize Middle School ski nights/weekends when we see some good powder.

Transportation to Cannonsburg will NOT be provided, but we will plan to meet by the fire pits and get kids on the slopes with their friends.  If this sounds like something your child would like to get involved in this school year, please sign up at Cannonsburg’s website.  The form linked above can also be sent to school, but Cannonsburg prefers we use the website to sign up.

All participants should fill out this form so that you’re not left out of any communications.  You can also search Facebook for our group: EGRMS Ski Club.  This Facebook group is private and can be used by anyone to coordinate rides, times to use your passes, and share pictures.  If you have any questions, please contact the Ski Club advisor Amy Marlow at amarlow@egrps.org.

What do a middle school mural, the marching band drumline, books for new readers, a fight choreographer for the fall play, the Robotics team, March Madness books, digital pianos, and ukuleles all have in common?

They’re all part of exciting new classroom enhancements approved by the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation this fall.

Come along with us as the teachers and students who applied for the grants learn for the first time that their grants have been funded. Here’s a video.
