Letter from the Editor:

Hey folx,

Happy LGBTQIA+ History Month! Did you know that the month of October has been acknowledged as queer history month since 1995? Learn more about it at the end of the newsletter!

This is my continuous reminder that everyone at the Sloss Center is a resource to students, faculty, and staff on campus and we will support folx in any way that we can.

We have many community aid and resources to help you navigate through, and are in the process of creating even more opportunities for individuals who visit the Sloss Center. So please feel free to stop by and chat with any of us on the Sloss staff. As well, we have a lot of community aid programming coming up, so keep a look out!

As always, continuous events and programs are happening throughout Iowa State, make sure to stay up to date and join in, meet some amazing individuals, and learn about different identities.

WE Lead

We Lead gives Iowa State students the opportunity to hone their leadership skills, engage in interactive discussions and sessions, network with other leaders from campus and the community, and reflect on their own identities, leadership qualities, and strengths in their respective roles at Iowa State and beyond. The theme for the conference is Leadership Beyond and will focus on the many ways that leadership can show up in our lives, especially for those with marginalized gender identities. The event will feature a variety of sessions that will focus specifically on “Beyond the Binary”, “Beyond #GirlBoss”, and “Beyond Graduation”, with a keynote address from Roberta Blevins, as seen in Amazon’s DocuSeries LuLaRich and her podcast, “Life After MLM”.

This event may be of particular interest to women (cis, trans, or otherwise), nonbinary individuals, nongendered students, or those who are looking to engage in dialogue around gender and leadership.

AAUW Start Smart Salary Negotiations Workshop

AAUW Start Smart salary negotiation workshops are specifically designed to teach you how to negotiate salaries for a new job. In every two-hour workshop you will gain confidence in your negotiation style through facilitated discussion and role-play and learn:

How to identify and articulate your personal value
How to develop an arsenal of persuasive responses and other strategies to use when negotiating
How to conduct objective market research to benchmark a target salary and benefits
About the wage gap, including its long-term consequences

Negotiations can increase the potential to earn higher salaries and better benefits packages. By negotiating fair and equitable salaries, you will be better able to pay off loans, buy the things you want and need, and even save (though it may seem like it is far away) for retirement.

ARTiculations

An interview series focusing on the contributions of women and non-binary artists.

The second volume of interviews in the series features Charlie Esker, Vivian Cook, Sang Lee, Zoë Fay-Stindt, and Tanvi Rastogi. The interviews will air on KHOI Radio, 89.1 FM on Mondays at 4pm throughout October for local listeners. Not local? Listen live at khoifm.org.

This program is hosted by Nancy Gebhart as a collaboration between the Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity and KHOI Community Radio. A special thanks to Rosie Rowe for editing the series.

Charlie, Vivian, Sang, Zoë, and Tanvi were asked to provide a playlist to accompany their interviews. Those songs were collected as an ARTiculations Volume 2 Spotify playlist and will air with the interview series.

Rec Services

Women's Weight Lifting Clinic

An opportunity for women to learn how to properly weight train is available for registration. Each class will begin in the fitness studio, State Gym 1218, for a presentation on the lift of the day and time to practice with a PVC pipe. Then the class will progress to the racks in State Gym. Women* Climb Night

Women* Climb Night is Back! This semester we are offering women* climb nights once a month, on the last Wednesday of every month from 7:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. This event is free to ISU members and open to non- pass holders and community members who are eligible to purchase a facility day pass!

*Why the asterisk? This program is open to individuals who identify as women or genderqueer. This includes women who are cisgender, trans, or of trans experience. We also welcome individuals who identify as gender non-binary or any other gender identity who seek this community. We recognize that gender is complex and members of our community that identify as women, genderqueer or belong to this group are all welcome to this program.

Multicultural Student Affairs

Join MSA and TRIO in celebrating Latiné Heritage Month! Learn more about Día De los Muertos, spend time in community, and bring photos of loved one to put on the ofrenda!

Come celebrate Latin* culture through music, dance, and food! Join in on Friday October 29 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Memorial Union!

International Students and Scholars Office

Join English Together! Improve your English through conversation, games, and topics of interest. You can join English Together any Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when you are free.

English Together is open to all international undergraduate & graduate students, post-docs, and community members.

Writing and Media Center

This week at the Writing and Media Center, they are focusing on self-care through writing. This can help you understand your feelings and thoughts, think about your choices, and evaluate them. It is important to stay in tune with yourself, and writing this out can be a great way to do so! Journaling for yourself can take many forms and look whatever way you want it to. It is important to remember there is no "right" way. Some choose to do a “brain dump” and write whatever they are thinking/feeling in that moment; others choose to use structure and specific prompts to get started with their writing.

The Writing and Media Center can help with resumes, essays, speeches, and more (even creative writing pieces)! They have appointments available online and in-person at the library and Hixson-Lied locations. If you are looking for more information or want to make an appointment, check out their website.

Pride Alliance

The Pride Alliance is a safe and brave space for queer individuals on campus. Pride Alliance strives to mix education and activism with socializing, pride and support. To sign up for an email list and be alerted on events and meetings, email iowastatepridealliance@gmail.com.

LGBTQIA+ History Month

LGBTQIA+ History Month is a month-long celebration of the history of the diverse and beautiful queer and trans* community and the importance of civil rights movements in progressing gay rights.

The observance was created by Rodney Wilson, a history teacher at a Missouri high school, in 1994. The following year, LGBTQ+ History Month was added to the list of commemorative months in a resolution forwarded by the General Assembly of the National Education Association.

October was chosen as the month of observance as National Coming Out Day already existed as a holiday on October 11.
