PROPOSAL TO RE-DEVELOP THE COLLEGE OF NORTH WEST LONDON SITE
The Friends of Gladstone Park thought that, bearing in mind the increased traffic and use of the park, this may be of interest to those living in the area.

The Hill Group will be holding public consultation events for the proposed College Green scheme on Thursday 20 October from 3pm to 7.30pm and Saturday 22 October from 11am to 2pm. These will take place at College of North West London Willesden Campus, Denzil Road, London NW10 2XD. They will also be holding a public consultation webinar event for on Wednesday 19 October at 7pm. The link to register for the webinar is:

The Anchor, The Drum, The Ship
Do go and take a look at the new beds planted at the top of the hill opposite what was once a bowling green and near the pond.  These beds 'evoke themes of black migration, belonging, communication, music and collective renewal'.  There are new plants I've not seen before, a Salvia africana and a Caryopteris x clandonensis 'Hint of Gold' as below.

Image as seen from the air of the new beds. The drum shape in the middle is the Adinkra symbol, Dono Ntoaso, and represents the joined drum, symbolising united action, communication and jubilation.
BIRD MIGRATION & THE RAILWAY LINE HEDGE
It's been a warm autumn both here and on the continent where the rowans there, Sorbus aucuparia, have provided an abundance of berries for migrating birds many of whom have yet to arrive here.

Keep a look out for Redwings and Fieldfares which can be seen in the park especially when the weather turns cold across Scandinavia, Finland and Iceland.  This year in the park the wild roses planted along the railway line hedge along with other British native shrubs, and planted by local volunteers, have produced an abundance of hips and berries for them.  There are quantities of hawthorn, alder buckthorn and spindle berries too, surprising given the lack of rain.

Having just been on a migration tour in Estonia I now realise just how many small birds migrate south.  Your winter Robin might just not be your summer Robin!  And the Starling numbers in the park have increased augmented by those from Northern Europe.

But to my utter amazement the numbers of Britain's tiniest bird, the Goldcrest, which is found in the park around the Monterey pines at the top of the hill, increases due to migration from the Baltic States and Finland.

Below:  Rose hips, pink spindle berries and alder buckthorn berries.  Do take a wander along the hedge which is slowly beginning to hide the ugly grey railings and is increasing bio-diversity in the park.

We have to thank Veolia and the Tesco plastic bags scheme for funding this hedge.
LET'S TALK CLIMATE:  BRENT COUNCIL
Samantha Haines at Brent Council is asking Brent residents to participate as below:
The climate emergency means the way we do things as a council and as a community has to change.  We have launched Let’s Talk Climate: waste and green space to ask for your views on what we can do differently and what you expect from us as we work together towards a cleaner, greener Brent.

We are looking for fresh bold ideas.  Your feedback could change how waste and recycling is managed, how we keep streets clean and how green spaces are maintained.  It will also feed into the delivery of our Climate Strategy and help shape the future of Brent

Is there a loved one you would like to remember and think about when visiting the Gladstone Park?
