Secrets Revealed by Dakota the Dinomummy Research
New discoveries about Dakota the Dinomummy released by the North Dakota Geologic Survey in October have been making the news in a big way. In addition to local news coverage, big hitters like CNN, National Geographic, and The New York Times have also highlighted how this special fossil is changing established paradigms about what is possible to find in the fossil record. New findings include bite marks and scratches on the mummified skin.
Clint Boyd, senior paleontologist at the ND Geologic Survey, summarized, “Not only has Dakota taught us that durable soft tissues like skin can be preserved on partially scavenged carcasses, but these soft tissues can also provide a unique source of information about the other animals that interacted with a carcass after death.” Researchers continue to work on the fossil, and parts of it are on exhibit at the ND Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.
