How would you like to have better relationships?  Sleep better?
How about improving your mental well being and health?  Or maybe, you'd like to improve your self-esteem and exchange your negative emotions like depression for a new outlook in life filled with hope and optimisum?

If the thought of having these things in your life appeal to you and you'd like to have them, then you need not look any further to accomplish them then in pursuing Thankfulness.
Aren't you thankful that there is a day where we dedicate the entire day being thankful and calling that day "Thanksgiving"? A time where we join with friends and family to celebrate being thankful for all we have and are blessed with. But Thanksgiving isn't just a holiday made for stuffing and turkey, it should be a part of the way we live EVERYDAY!
Why should it be a part of our lives every day? There are SO MANY benefits to being thankful and scripture and science prove it. Having a grateful and thankful heart brings joy and hope and blessings into our lives. When our hearts are lifted-up with thanksgiving, there is no room for anything negative in our lives. No depression or the "blues". No self-pity parties to attend, or anxieties and fear. Thankfulness pushes out the blues and blahs and all the other negative feelings we have because it brings forth and shines on the goodness of life, of others, and ourselves and God.
How do we know this? Let us look at some scriptures on Thankfulness.
General Bible Verses about Thanksgiving and Gratitude
  • 1. Psalm 100:4 – “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!”
  • 2. Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
  • 3. Nehemiah 12:27 – “And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites in all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem to celebrate the dedication with gladness, with thanksgivings and with singing, with cymbals, harps, and lyres.”
  • 4. Ephesians 5:4 – “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.”
  • 5. Psalm 138:1-3 – “I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; I bow down toward your holy temple and give thanks to your name for your steadfast love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.”
  • 6. Colossians 2:6-7 - “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”
As you can see scripture is full of verses showing numerous examples of people giving thanks and obviously was a part of their daily lives, and it is something God's Word tells us to do. Is thanksgiving part of your life? Do you have a heart of thanksgiving? You can start today to pursue thankfulness, making it a part of your everyday way of life as people did in the scriptures. The list above is a small example of scripture regarding thankfulness. Here are some other scriptures to help you cultivate a thankful heart:  click here.  Start lifting your thanks to God and pursue a heart of thanksgiving!

We've seen how scripture is filled with words of thanksgiving and how it was a way of living for many in the bible but what about in today's society? What does science say about the benefits of being thankful? According to an article in "Greater Good Magazine" (How Gratitude Changes You and Your Brain (berkeley.edu) we discover the following:
THANKFULNESS can...
  1. Unshackle us from toxic emotions
  2. Help us even if you do not share it
  3. Change you and your brain
  4. Have lasting effects on the brain
And according to Psychology Today (7 Scientifically Proven Benefits of Gratitude | Psychology Today) there are at least 7 scientifically proven benefits to pursing Thankfulness can do the following for us:
  1. Opens the door to more relationships
  2. Improves physical health
  3. Improves psychological health
  4. Enhances empathy and reduces aggression
  5. People sleep better
  6. Improves self-esteem
  7. Increases mental strength
With the holidays coming up soon, people do get "the blues" but it does not have to be that way, this holiday, or any other time. When we pursue thankfulness, it can take "the blues" away! Remember these things you've learn here and be THANKFUL! Have that attitude of gratitude. Be thankful in all things! (1 Thessalonians 5:18) Use Thankfulness as a tool that you can use in your life which can do a tremendous amount of good for you and in others. Pursue Thankfulness and you will find that life is far more abundant than you ever knew! May you have not only a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with your friends and family, but may your THANKSGIVING continue throughout your life and let it fill you up more so than any thanksgiving meal ever could!

I thank God every time I remember you. Philippians 1:3

Gratitude. Paul comes to mind immediately when I think of thankfulness. With the many sufferings and trials he went
through, do you often wonder, how on earth he could say the things he said in the midst of these situations?
For most of us, it is often easy to point out the ingratitude in others, but do you reflect on your own attitude of
gratitude? In this season of the year, we all tend to be more focused on being thankful, and grateful for the many
blessings we have. Can we obtain that attitude all year, and every day?
Thankfulness and gratitude as a practice, especially before starting your day, cause physical and spiritual changes in your
life.
- Improved mental health: gratitude can have the power to rewire our brains for the better
- Improved physical health: gratitude can give you better sleep, higher immunity, reduced pain and cardiovascular
health.
- Stronger social bonds: gratitude not only lifts your own mental and physical well-being, but also has a ripple effect.
When you can express your gratitude and thankfulness to others, you are building bonds and improving
relationship.
- Resilience: Gratitude helps us to refocus on positive emotions. Seeing things in a more positive light and giving you
more strength to face the challenges in our lives.
Think of at least 3 things to be thankful for before you begin your day. Even write them down. With prayer and
thanksgiving, watch and see what amazing things begin to happen in your life, and those around you.
