Message from SOTF about CFR

Casting for Recovery

I am always happy to write about and encourage others to learn about Casting for Recovery.  This incredibly special organization was founded in 1996 by a breast reconstruction surgeon and a professional fly fisher.  Their healing outdoor retreats for women with breast cancer are provided at no cost to participants. They are open to women with breast cancer of all ages, in all stages of treatment and recovery.

These programs incorporate the gentle motion of fly casting, which can be good physical therapy increasing mobility in the upper body, with the emotional benefits of connecting with nature and bonding with other women on the same journey.  Casting for Recovery offers 40+ free retreats across the country, serving more than 700 women each year.  A full 70% of those women have never been to a support group.   And, CFR has inspired six other countries outside the U.S. to offer similar programs.

Sisters on the Fly has been a major supporter of CFR for the last 15 years. Some of our members have been instructors on these retreats and others have been participants.  It’s all about supporting women facing a difficult diagnosis and recovery path.  If you, or someone you know or love, find themselves needing support and encouragement while on a path to recovery suggest they go to https://castingforrecovery.org for more information on how to participate in a retreat.

Sister of the Month
I am a domestic abuse survivor now a breast cancer survivor. I had a sunburn on my chest, and I found a lump on my breastbone. I was immediately scheduled for a mammogram and ultrasound. I had already been reading up on it so when the radiologist kept going over the spot and noted the star pattern, I knew. I got the call I had been dreading. I was stage 1 Grade 3 breast cancer; it was 80% aggressive and they needed to do surgery ASAP. In the 2 weeks, one of the tumors had grown from twelve millimeters to eighteen.

Everything happened so fast.

They put in my chemo port, I cried because I didn’t know it was going directly into my heart. My poor heart had been broken enough that year.

I started chemo on what would have been my 12th wedding anniversary. So here I am going thru a heart-wrenching divorce, coping with years of domestic abuse, and facing cancer.

While I was in the chair for my very first chemo, I received a call from a company I had wanted to work for. I said yes, when do I start? He said tomorrow. I said I will be there. I put on my lipstick, and I started my new job.

I began to lose my hair. Every stroke of the brush was full, and my pillow was covered in multiple strands each morning. Oddly, I never cried but would hold my breath until I covered my balding head. I went thru 6 months of extraordinarily strong chemo. In October I wore my Wonder Woman costume and passed out pink bracelets to patients and firefighters, it made me feel good to cheer up other people.

As sick as I was, I always had the need to help others.

I was inspired to motivate others because I know how it feels to be stifled and belittled and made to feel that you are worthless. I know what the ravages of cancer and the treatment has on a body. On my journey, I am learning that I have value and much to contribute to our community. I wanted to encourage other domestic abuse and cancer survivors that an entire world exists for them. With Sisters on the Fly, I found, we give each other confidence to try things we may not have had the courage to do.

I love Sisters on the Fly because every person in it can teach us something. We all have worth, we all have value.

My go-to recipe is Cast Iron Chocolate Chip Cookie!
Super easy to make and done in no time! A great addition to a potluck, or birthday party or serve individually and top with vanilla ice cream!

2 1/2 cups Flour (or Gluten Free Flour add 1 tsp Xantham Gum)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp Baking Soda
Wet:
2 Sticks Butter (soft room temp)
3/4 cups Cane Sugar
3/4 cups Brown Sugar
Add 2 eggs
1tsp Vanilla

**Cream butter and sugar first then add eggs and vanilla***

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375, grease a 10" Cast Iron Pan with butter
2. Mix butter and sugar in a large bowl until creamy (by hand or mixer)
3. Add eggs and vanilla to creamed mixture
4. Combine flour (dry ingredients) in a large bowl
5. Add Flour (dry) into creamed mixture until forms a ball
6. Add 2 cups of Chocolate Chips
