Contemporary Issues Foretaste: Leadership for the Missional Church is written by our very own Rev. Paul M. Dietterich. We have too often missed the point that it is the community of faith, the church, that is called to be a sign, instrument, and in particular a foretaste of the reign of God. So, what would an appetizer of God's coming reign look like anyway? The focus of this book is not only on what a church does but how it goes about doing what it does. To join on Zoom (link).

Our pledges will be dedicated on All Saints Day, Sunday, November 6th. As a part of that day's celebration, there will be a "Gratitude Luncheon" after church in Fellowship Hall. There will be chicken and several side items topped off with a nice dessert. The meal will be provided, and there is a suggestion of a $10 per person donation toward the costs. Everyone should plan to attend and celebrate our successes by enjoying time with your church family!

The Open and Affirming Team will host "The Trans List and our response" documentary and discussion hybrid event on Saturday, November 12, from 10 am to 12 pm. The HBO documentary, The Trans List, is about 57 minutes long, and we will watch it together in person at the church library. The second hour will be a hybrid section, both in-person and online, where we can share our reflections and issues related to transgender and gender non-binary folks in our community and country. Our neighbor, Brave Space Alliance, will join us for the conversation. BSA is a black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ center on 53rd place (link to BSA website). Soft drinks and refreshments will be provided, and the Guide of in-person gathering issued by the Church Council will be followed.
If you want to join the second-hour discussion remotely, registration is needed to retrieve the Zoom meeting information. Here is the link to the registration (https://tinyurl.com/39jsak3y). You can also find more information about this HBO documentary and watch it at your place. Here is the link (click).
* This event is free to our church members, friends , and Hyde Park communities.

Awareness: Transgender and their rights

The Guardians responded to 4John Oliver's newest episode, Transgender Rights II, on Last Week Tonight. “The benefits of providing care are immense and the risks of withholding it are dire,” he added, citing a 2019 study of 28,000 trans people by UCLA, which found that of those who wanted hormone therapy and didn’t receive it, 58% reported suicidal thoughts in a given year. Such consequences from withheld care have forced some trans kids to become activists, such as 11-year-old Kai Shappley, who testified before the Texas legislature and has since fled the state.
“If a child has to become an activist, we have already failed that child,” said Oliver, because kids like Shappley “should just get to be a kid and enjoy her life”. (link to The Guardians' article). You can watch this episode on YouTube for free, here is the link (click).
