We provided 70 sack meals for the Night Ministry this month! Everyone is welcome to join this ministry on the third Wednesday of each week. The next time will be November 16. We are also preparing for the Halloween events, for the Youth and all of us, on October 31. The Youth will gather on Harper and 57th Street at 5:45, and all church members and friends will gather at the church's main entrance. Check out the Up-Coming UCHP Events for more details.
We are marching into the fourth week of Saints Alive! Living Generously annual stewardship campaign. If you missed the previous testimonies, you can still catch up (link)! This coming Sunday, the Think Group will give us a brief testimony. Don't forget to contact the church office for your stewardship documents. On November 6th, the day of Pledge Dedication, we will have Gratitude Luncheon after the worship service in the Fellowship Hall.
As November approaches, there will be a series of information in our newsletter and events regarding the awareness of Transgender and gender non-binary folks' context. Starting this week, we would like to pay attention to our upcoming event on November 12, The Trans List and our response (Up-coming UCHP event), and a short video from Last Week Tonight, Transgender Rights II (aired on October 17, 2022). It's an ongoing incident: our trans and gender non-binary siblings are targeted. It's our responsibility to respond to it collectively.
PLEDGE DEDICATION & LUNCHEON
By now, you have probably received your 2023 Financial Campaign letter and pledge card in the mail.  It is important, as budgets are planned for 2023, that your pledge is returned to the church as soon as possible. You may also drop your pledge in the offering plate on Sunday if you wish. Our pledges will be dedicated on All Saints Day, Sunday, November 6th. As a part of that day's celebration, there will be a "Gratitude Luncheon" after church in Fellowship Hall. There will be chicken and several side items topped off with a nice dessert. The meal will be provided, and there is a suggestion of a $10 per person donation toward the costs. Everyone should plan to attend and celebrate our successes by enjoying time with your church family!
Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry. Two-thirds of this offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects through grants. This year, special consideration will be given to projects focusing on serving our immigrant neighbors and communities. (link to the introduction)

Contemporary Issues Foretaste: Leadership for the Missional Church is written by our very own Rev. Paul M. Dietterich. We have too often missed the point that it is the community of faith, the church, that is called to be a sign, instrument, and in particular a foretaste of the reign of God. So, what would an appetizer of God's coming reign look like anyway? The focus of this book is not only on what a church does but how it goes about doing what it does. To join on Zoom (link).

The Open and Affirming Team will host "The Trans List and our response" documentary and discussion hybrid event on Saturday, November 12, from 10 am to 12 pm. The HBO documentary, The Trans List, is about 57 minutes long, and we will watch it together in person at the church library. The second hour will be a hybrid section, both in-person and online, where we can share our reflections and issues related to transgender and gender non-binary folks in our community and country. Our neighbor, Brave Space Alliance, will join us for the conversation. BSA is a black-led, trans-led LGBTQ+ center on 53rd place (link to BSA website). Soft drinks and refreshments will be provided, and the Guide of in-person gathering issued by the Church Council will be followed.

If you want to join the second-hour discussion remotely, registration is needed to retrieve the Zoom meeting information. Here is the link to the registration (https://tinyurl.com/39jsak3y). You can also find more information about this HBO documentary and watch it at your place. Here is the link (click).
* This event is free to our church members, friends , and Hyde Park communities.
Awareness: Transgender and their rights
The Guardians responded to 4John Oliver's newest episode, Transgender Rights II, on Last Week Tonight. “The benefits of providing care are immense and the risks of withholding it are dire,” he added, citing a 2019 study of 28,000 trans people by UCLA, which found that of those who wanted hormone therapy and didn’t receive it, 58% reported suicidal thoughts in a given year. Such consequences from withheld care have forced some trans kids to become activists, such as 11-year-old Kai Shappley, who testified before the Texas legislature and has since fled the state.
“If a child has to become an activist, we have already failed that child,” said Oliver, because kids like Shappley “should just get to be a kid and enjoy her life
