State Treasurer Presents $2,500 To Northridge School

NEWTON—Northridge Elementary School Principal Megan Nagel stood near a line in the school gym, getting hug after hug from students and even one teacher who were among those gathered there for a big school announcement.

The announcement centered around the school getting awarded $2,500 from the Kansas State Treasurer’s Office Choose My School Supply Drive, which was in August. The school was chosen randomly after Nagel nominated the school. Nagel’s nomination was the winning entry.

Barr Raises Pheasants, Quail By The Thousands

HALSTEAD—This time of year, Albert Barr’s farm between Halstead and Bentley is teeming with pheasants and other game birds.

As the owner of Prairie Game Birds, Barr raises thousands of game birds every year to sell to hunters. Since 2014, Barr has grown his business from the ground up, starting with an empty field to now being a sprawling complex of enclosures, pens and brooder houses.

County Adopts Wind Regulations With Some Changes

The Harvey County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution Oct. 13 that puts into place regulations for commercial renewable energy projects.

Commissioners adopted the regulations approved by the Harvey County Planning Commission last month with six changes, the most significant of which was narrowing the setback requirement from a neighbor’s land from 1,500 to 1,000 feet.

Seventh Grader Makes Best Chili In Burrton

BURRTON—Maddox Martin may only be a seventh grader, but that didn’t stop him from beating six adults in Burrton’s fourth annual chili cook-off, last Saturday.

His winning concoction included beans, hamburger, tomato sauce and chili seasoning. He said his parents helped him come up with the recipe.

Expert Recommends Using Woven Cloth To Protect Plants

NEWTON—Addison Powell and Elizabeth Shepherd spent Monday afternoon rearranging hundreds of mums at Stutzmans Greenhouse and Garden Center in Newton in advance of the first freeze of the fall.

The two moved the fall perennials under tables and then covered them with frost cloth.
