Enter the Social Sciences Sticker Design Contest with $50 cash prize awards for each winning design!
  • We need Dept of Social Science themed stickers: The goal is to have stickers for each of our degree Programs - Anthropology; History; Sustainability Science; Policy, Law, & Society; Policy & Community Development; Social Sciences.  Any or all.  Create one design that could work for any program or make an individualized design for your favorite degree programs!  We are looking for something you would be proud to put on your laptop or water bottle.  Anything from simple sketches to print-ready copies will be accepted. See an example for inspiration in the link below.

   Reminder: Oral History Workshop, Fri. Oct. 28, Annex Conference Room  The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center announces the schedule for Sonderegger22 Symposium on Friday, November 4 @ Northern Michigan University.  See details of the symposium here. There will be a free lunch for attendees.

New Resource Available
Thanks to some grant funds distributed to us through our consortium we were able to purchase the Historical Newspaper, Detroit Free Press for the years 1831-1999. We will have perpetual access to these years through ProQuest. The link is available here and on the library's Databases A-Z webpage.

Social Scientists in Action
  • Dr. Hongmei Lu (departmental alum, PhD EEP 2020, now a postdoctoral researcher at Utrecht University, Netherlands) and Dr. Angie Carter have published "Emergent regional collaborative governance in rural local food systems development" in Community Development. The paper analyzes emergent regional collaborative governance in the Western UP's rural food system and is a product of Dr. Carter's REF award. The article is available open access here.
  • Dr. Jonathan Robins comes across a lot of new books in his role as book review for Agricultural History. His tweet about the acknowledgment page in one recent book, Johnathan Saha's Colonizing Animals, went viral with over 7.5 million views and nearly 270,000 "likes." National Public Radio produced a story about the subject of the tweet, a now-deceased cat named Toast who, Saha writes, was "no help at all." The article draws attention to Saha's work on animals in colonial Myanmar and the field of animal studies.

Other Student Announcements
  • If you are interested in the Mexico Spring Break Trip, apply ASAP! Space is filling up fast! There will be a final info session for the trip on Thursday from 5-6 in AOB commons. Bring your questions, enthusiasm, and a friend! Mexican snacks will be provided. 
  • The department is seeking students or faculty interested in developing and hosting a Student Youth Program (SYP) this summer as a recruitment activity for one of our undergraduate degree programs. There are funds to cover salaries and expenses as well as a very strong level of planning and logistical support. Email Dr. Don Lafreniere (djlafren@mtu.edu) if you are interested to discuss details. Deadline to commit is October 28th.
  • Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Amtrak Tourism: Trains, Cities, and Sustainability faculty-led study away. The program is only $1000+Tuition and makes 6 stops over 19 days where students can earn 6-13 credits over the course of Summer A. Anyone interested is welcome to attend an informational session in the AOB Commons (Rm 209) at 5:30pm on October 26th. There will be snacks. You can also reach out to the faculty director and co-director, directly: Dr. Mark Rhodes (marhodes@mtu.edu) and Dr. Kathryn Hannum (khannum@mtu.edu). 
Upcoming Conferences, Webinars, and Talks
  • The application for the C2C Fellows Sustainability Leadership Virtual Training on 12/3/2022 is open now.  C2C workshops are for undergraduate students and recent graduates who want high-impact sustainability careers that can change the future, in policy, business and politics. The workshop will last from 9 am to 5 pm EST on 12/3/2022. The application deadline is 11/15/22. To apply click here.
Internal Undergraduate Award Available

Fall Department of Social Sciences Undergraduate Professional Development Mini-grant The Department of Social Sciences supports majors in our department, with the opportunity to enhance their research and professional development.

  • Grants of up to $500 per year are available to travel to a professional conference, apply toward research expenses, or any other activity that enhances professional development. This could include participating in a workshop or training program, learning a language, study away, working on a community project, or more. Another call to apply for this award will be announced in Spring.

  • PhD Graduate Research Assistantship Opportunity
    Coastal Studies Institute, East Carolina University 
    • The Integrated Coastal Sciences PhD program at East Carolina University is seeking a graduate research assistant interested in using applied and interdisciplinary approaches to examine coastal issues to assist with a research project funded by the National Science Foundation’s Coastlines and People Hubs for Research and Broadening Participation. The assistantship and PhD coursework will begin in Fall 2023. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. Cynthia Grace-McCaskey, with the support and coordination of a large and interdisciplinary research team. The application deadline for the ICS program is January 15, 2023, earlier submissions are highly encouraged.   • Michigan Space Grant Consortium (MSGC) is now accepting applications for our 2023-2024 awards until November 16, 2022. Graduate Fellowships:
    • NEW Art Pilot: Students working with art and design are encouraged to apply! Starting this year, MSGC is piloting an expanded definition of STEM to include support for interdisciplinary projects that include art. The fellowship-supported research may occur over the summer, during the academic year, or both. Award Amount: $5,000
    • HONES: Student group activities should align closely with NASA’s strategic interests as expressed in NASA’s 2014 & 2018 Strategic Plans and the following areas of emphasis that NASA has specified for the Program Description. Award Amount: Up to $5,000 requires 1:1 Match
 
Post Docs:

  • New program guidelines are now available for SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. The next proposal submission deadline has been pushed back to January, 2023, but the 2023 fellowship start dates are not expected to be delayed. Proposals must now be submitted using Research.gov or Grants.gov (FastLane proposals are no longer accepted). Visit the SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellowships web page for more information. The SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellowships support fundamental research in the social, behavioral and economic sciences and efforts to broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in these fields.
