Dear Soaring Heights Families,

Welcome to the second quarter of the 2022/23 school year. Hard to believe we are already done with the first quarter (and almost the end of the first trimester)! This time of year brings us the beautiful fall colors, cooler temperatures and the possibility of inclement weather. Please check the forecast and help your child be prepared for the ever-changing Colorado weather. Now is the time to find those hats, coats and gloves before our first storm. For all personal belongings, please label with your student’s first and last names. If your student is missing items, remind them to check lost and found as items tend to be returned after a day or so.

For Middle School 8th grade students, Erie High School’s open house is Tuesday, November 8th. Please look for information shared from Erie High School.

Boys basketball is in a full court press with their second game on October 19th. A couple of important upcoming events at Soaring Heights include our Halloween celebrations that take place on October 31st. There will be a parade around the track to start the day. Parents are welcome to attend the parade outside but we are limiting the people at parties to a small number of volunteers for each classroom.

The middle school Night of Fright Dance will be on October 28th. Additionally, we have the Socktober sock drive with the SHPK8 PTO from October 10-19. Please bring NEW socks, in a neutral color and your size, to the collection bins by the school entrances. The middle school honor roll is the 17th of November. Be on the lookout for more details as the date approaches.

As we move deeper into the school year, attendance becomes more important to your student’s learning and is directly related to their grades and growth in their grade level. Please ensure that your student is attending everyday to get the most out of this important time in their lives.

Sincerely,

Cyrus Weinberger, Principal

Dear Soaring Heights Families,

The Colorado Health Foundation awarded SVVSD a Physical Activity Grant in the amount of $1.4 million in 2014. The Physical Activity Grant was designed to support SVVSD in increasing the amount of student participation in daily moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Specifically, all elementary and K-8 schools received funding and support over two years to implement opportunities for movement outside of the school day, incorporate movement breaks into classroom instruction time, and provide more opportunities for movement during recess.

In order to increase MVPA outside of the school day, SVVSD implemented the 100 Mile Club at all  elementary and K-8 schools. As 100 Mile Club participants, students track the miles they walk or run during 100 Mile Club designated time at school and at 100 Mile Club sanctioned community events. This allows ALL students to participate and is a great way to combine all of their activities towards a common goal—walking or running 100 miles during the school year.

The 100 Mile Club was one of two $100,000 National Winners of the ASAP (Active Schools Acceleration Project) in 2012 (the other was Red Hawk Elementary). It is a well-established national program that provides ongoing support and resources to schools (website, email, phone, newsletter, media tools, helpful suggestions, and instructions). Students receive milestone incentives (t-shirt, golden pencil, wristband, and final certificate) along the way to help keep them motivated throughout the year. If students reach their goal of 100 miles, they are awarded a gold medal at the Year-End Medal Ceremony where every participant celebrates their total miles run.

Soaring Heights PK-8 will be starting the 100 Mile Club starting Tuesday, October 18th. The 100-mile club will be on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. Your student can attend any or all times.   Please have your child meet at the flagpole in front of the school at 7:30 a.m.  On inclement weather days students will walk inside the school.

The registration cost for 100 Mile Club is $20 per student per year.    Please click on the registration link below.

Broken/Damaged iPads

The district issued iPads are important tools all of our students use every day.  Please remind your students to come to school with a fully charged iPad and to handle them with care.  Thank you for your help taking care of this important tool.

We are hosting a sock drive. Please drop off your donations in our collection bins by the school entrances (inside) from October 10th-19th. We’re excited to help other SVVSD students in need in this way as it starts to get colder outside!

UNIVERSAL FREE MEALS HAVE EXPIRED FOR THE 22/23 SCHOOL YEAR. Upon the start of the school year, students will be charged for lunch unless they qualify for free or reduced-price meals. We are encouraging families to apply for meal benefits for the 2022–2023 school year  to ensure negative balances do not accrue on students’ accounts.

Applying online is the fastest way to get your application processed to ensure no lapse in coverage happens. Applying online also reduces the chance for errors and the need to send applications back to families to correct.

If you do not believe you qualify for free or reduced-price meals, please make sure that there is money on your students’ accounts. You can add money to their account through MySchoolBucks
