I got a summary from AmazonSmile showing my total contributions since I signed up in 2016. My charity of choice is Banderas Bay Charities, Inc., and I'm proud to have generated more than US $1,000 to it, even given the relatively small percentage that Amazon contributes.  Just wanted to remind all of you that if you buy through AmazonSmile rather than Amazon or AmazonPrime, you too can automatically contribute to PEACE with every purchase you make. Couldn't be easier to sign up using your Amazon account.

Banderas Bay Charities, Inc supports PEACEAnimals, Amigos de La Cruz and other local charities.

Research on Dog and Cat Intelligence

by Clare Leach

While there is ever the debate about whether our dog and cat friends actually think, Mark Braeden from Technobark says a definite, YES!

Are you ready for this, the average intelligence of a dog is an IQ of 100 or about that of a 2-year old child and some up to 4- or 5-year olds.

The IQ tests for dogs include a language test and the results showed an average dog can learn up to 165 words with inclusions of signals and gestures just like a 2-year old. Top level of intelligence means a dog can learn up to 250 words.

The University of Columbia professor Stanley Coren focuses of the psychology of dogs’ intelligence. The book “THE INTELLIGENCE of DOGS” stated that there are 3 major aspects of dog intelligence:
*intelligence – focus on a dog’s ability to solving problems without any help from its human.
*instinctive intelligence – focus on capability to perform tasks inherent to their breed such as herding, hunting and fetching.
*working and obedience intelligence – focus on how a dog learns from human.

Many people doubt this research because they just can’t believe man’s best friend is also that smart.

Interesting, it took a long time for people to believe the world isn’t flat, too!

An article from Purina states, “That cats have a brain structure similar to other intelligent animals and that the cat’s brain structure is 90% similar to the human brain!”

Psychology Today research affirms the cat’s cerebral cortex where rational decision-making and solving problems takes place – has 300 million neurons. This area of the brain involves planning of action and storing short term and long term memories. Cats tend to learn by doing rather than seeing. Cats possess more nerve cells in visual areas of their brain than humans or most other mammals.

Cats, as any cat’s human knows, are harder to research because they are just not as cooperative as dogs in research studies. Cats, well, want to do it their way.

Dogs are seen as more intelligent because they are easier to train. More research is proving cats can be trained.

In this age old debate, it seems the important thing for all of us to start to see is just because animals can’t talk does not mean they are “dumb” or can’t think. This is why education is so important to let all humans know animals need care and love and they are intelligent beings, and we are their caregivers!

Every cat and dog not cared for is suffering.

Pitillal
Oct 12-15

PEACEAnimals was welcomed by the Cultural Center in Pitillal this week. The Centro Cultural Pitillal is a remarkable place where residents enjoy a variety of services and activities including sewing, music, computer, silk screening, and pottery classes, as well as a rock climbing wall and skateboard ramps. It is also a focal point for other education and outreach programs, the morning of our arrival there was a vaccine campaign going on for elderly residents. They provided a spacious area inside for our clinic operations.

We are pleased to welcome back our valued team member Leslie from her maternity leave. Her baby Coral joined us under the constant care of her nanny "America" and captured the attention and adoration of everyone there. Every area we serve is distinct in terms of the types of animals. Pitillal must have a lot of cat lovers considering we saw more than double the cats over dogs this week.
