SCAN Stands Up for Contemporary Arts in the Costs Crisis

With the Costs Crisis biting this winter, we're making the case for artists and arts organisations at the highest level. We’ve been working since the spring to alert policy-makers and funders, meeting and surveying members and briefing on the crisis.

Earlier this week we met with building-based arts organisations to hear the latest on rising costs and energy and utilities bills. On October 26, SCAN director Moira Jeffrey met with Neil Gray MSP, Minister for Culture, Europe and International Development, where they discussed the challenges as well as new approaches to support.

On October 12, our director Moira also attended a roundtable on the crisis for the cultural sector hosted by Sarah Boyack MSP, providing information that has been raised at Holyrood.

At this year's summit we'll explore how arts and culture can speak clearly, positively, and compassionately at times of political upheaval. Across a day-long programme of presentations, talks, exercises, and screenings, we’ll hear from a range of guests about using art to amplify marginalised voices, as a currency for sharing beyond borders, and as a tool for making power visible.

We're thrilled to announce our guest speakers and contributors for this year's summit: 

• Filmmakers and Indigenous grassroots activists Karrabing Film Collective
• Amal Khalaf, Director of Programmes at Cubitt and Civic Curator at the Serpentine Galleries, London
• Curator and artist Lara Khaldi, a member of the artistic team of documenta fifteen
• Anna McLauchlan, an interdisciplinary artist and specialist in somatic practices and yoga
• Alison Phipps, UNESCO Chair in Refugee Integration through Language and the Arts
• Mykola Ridyni (born in Kharkiv, Ukraine) a filmmaker and founding member of SOSka group
• Tawona Sitholé, a poet, playwright, educator, and mbira musician.

Looking Back on #ArtUnlocks 2022

In a new #ArtUnlocks article, our director Moira Jeffrey reflects on this year's campaign as we reach the end of our season of summer visits. With a difficult winter ahead for all of us, it's a moment to look back on lessons learned about the value of contemporary art in times of crisis, and to make the case afresh for a supported, sustainable arts sector in Scotland.

Here are some highlights from the SCAN community:

Family Fugue, from SCAN Member George Finlay Ramsay and collaborators, takes the viewer on a journey through the mythology of the artist's family tree, exploring how our ancestors haunt us and how we haunt them. At Generator Projects Dundee until November 6. Find out more here.

Yelena Popova's Made Ground, at Cample Line in Dumfries until December 11, includes paintings made with soil and rock collected locally to Cample. These works extend the artist's series of "post-petrochemical paintings," which explore the particularities of place through soil, stone, pigment, gesture and colour. Find out more here.

Hayley Tompkin's Far, at Edinburgh's Fruitmarket until January 29, is the largest UK selection to date of the Glasgow-based artist's work. It includes her well-known alterations of everyday objects through colourful, abstract layers of paint. Find out more here.

Turner Prize-winning artist Elizabeth Price brings a new show, Underfoot, to the Hunterian in Glasgow, using never-before-seen archival material to explore the history of textile manufacturing in Scotland through a new moving-image work and a new textile piece.
