This Sunday at First Unitarian Church
October 23, 2022
Livestreamed  at 10:30 am (prelude begins at 10:25)
“You’ve Got a Friend, or Do You?”
Friends break our hearts, and we break theirs, yet it is our heartbreak that binds us to one another.  The older we get, the more important it is to have friends, yet it is harder to keep them.

Get your letters to GET OUT THE VOTE
Come to the Schweitzer room after church on Oct.  23 to pick up a packet of letters to complete and send to PA voters who are registered but seldom vote. Take them home, complete them, address the envelopes, and return them to us on or before October 23 to be stamped and mailed by the UU the VOTE team on October 29. Everyone should exercise their right to vote and to have their voices heard.
The October Share the Plate charity is UU Justice PA.
"Pennsylvania UUs are aware of justice issues and are called to speak and take action that leads to a better Commonwealth" (our Vision Statement), and our Mission is "Pursuing justice by voting, advocating and making just public policies." There are currently six Justice Teams focused on Criminal Justice Reform, Economic Justice, Environmental Justice, Good Government, Gun Violence prevention, and Reproductive Justice. All these issues are strongly anti-racist. Visit the website at https://uujusticepa.org/ to learn more about specific initiatives, become a member, and join a team focused on your justice passion.

NEWSLETTER NEWS

By now, everyone with a pledge on record for 2022 should have received a letter with your “rollover” pledge amount for 2023. We hope that you have had time to reflect on whether or not to accept that amount or to make a change.
The Annual Budget Drive, which will shape next year’s budget, is due to conclude on Monday, October 31.

If you feel that the suggested amount is appropriate for you, there’s nothing you need to do. Your rollover pledge will be recorded in early November.  If, however, you would like to make a change, either an increase or a decrease, based on your individual circumstances, please do so as soon as possible online or by mailing the form on your letter to the church office.

If you did not make a pledge for 2022, we ask that you go to the website or contact the committee at stewardship@first-unitarian-pgh.org to make a pledge for 2023. While we greatly appreciate each and every donation, knowing that we can expect your support in the coming year allows our Treasurer and Board of Trustees to create a budget that reflects our sustained commitment to our religious community and the programming and causes that we support.

The Annual Budget Drive provides the lion’s share of our congregation’s financial support.  We hope you will be as generous as you can in helping to fund our religious community. Thank you for your support.

Upcoming Meetings and Events
Sesion de la Mesa Blanca
Friday, October 28 @ 7pm Room TBD
An invitation to experience a 'sesion' of Puerto Rican Espiritismo - "the white table" - led by Erica Shadowsong. The "thinning of the Veil" at this time of year draws us closer to the realms of spirit, our guides, and our ancestors. At this small service, you are invited to bring inspirational poetry, songs or scripture to read aloud as we celebrate the bright and good beings - or that great Love - that comes into life with us and guides us to be our best selves. If you can, please wear white! Children are welcome to be present and participate; the service will be 30 - 45 minutes at the most.

The school in India we've been sponsoring since 2003 is bursting at the seams, and they are making great progress in building additional classrooms. Our India contact shared earlier this year that grades 6, 7, and 9 now have two sections, each with 85, 62, and 80+ students, respectively. It's unclear how they have been managing, but we just saw photos of the expansion in progress. The original two classrooms we funded to begin the Higher Secondary School in 2016 (grades 11 and 12) are in the bottom right corner of the photo.

For more information about the partnership and how to donate, click HERE. We continue to fund the two Higher Secondary School Teachers' salaries of $4800 each.

We'd love to have you join the Partnership Team! The next meeting is on Tuesday, October 25, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
