ABC President Forrest Harris was one of six community leaders who received the Tower of Justice Award on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the Scarritt Bennett Center’s Inaugural Radical Change Agent Banquet. In addition to recognizing the award recipients, the event honored the two African-American women – Delaris Johnson and Lelia Robinson – who integrated Scarritt College for Christian Workers in 1952.

“We’re proud of the way in which women have always advocated for change, and we’re also proud of the history of American Baptist College,” said President Harris. “Our College has been at the forefront of radical change and working for social justice. This is who we’ve been, this is who we are. I’m proud of this legacy and I’m proud that it continues as we share in the celebration of this Radical Change Banquet."

HBCUs Working Together to

Members of the American Baptist College senior leadership, faculty, and staff attended the White House Initiative’s annual HBCU Week Conference, September 20-23, 2022, in Washington, D.C. The theme of this year’s conference was “Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity,” with a focus on the innovative ways HBCUs increase competitiveness in higher education.
The conference included workshops and seminars centered on several key areas:
- Research and Innovation
- Institutional Development
- Government Grants and Contracts
- Healthcare and Wellness
- Infrastructure
- Economic Opportunity
- STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)
Additionally, there were specialized sessions for presidents and chancellors on reimagining the FSA (federal student aid)/institutional partnership; advancing broadband communities through HBCUs; and optimizing HBCU endowments. With multiple opportunities to network with colleagues in the HBCU universe, this event continues to create a sense of community beyond the ABC campus.

Marshall, Crumlin Re-Elected as Board Chair, Vice Chair

At the quarterly meeting of the ABC Board of Trustees this month, Dennie Marshall and James Crumlin were re-elected as chair and vice chair, respectively.
|
|
Subcommittee chairs were confirmed at the meeting, as well:
- Board Affairs and Investments – Linda Rose
- Academic and Student Affairs – Darrell Drumwright
- Business and Audit Compliance – Donnetta Butler
- Institutional Advancement and Campus Planning – Don Hardin
Four new members have joined the Board of Trustees in 2022: Rev. E.L. Branch; Rev. Dr. Christopher Davis; Rev. Dr. Johnny Flakes III; and Dr. Cynthia Turner-Graham.

ABC Welcomes State HBCU Advisory Council
|
|
This week, American Baptist College welcomed HBCU leaders from throughout the state for a meeting of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission’s HBCU Advisory Council. The meeting was the Council’s first gathering at a campus site.
“We always welcome the opportunity to share ideas and strategies with our colleagues,” said ABC President Forrest Harris, “and it was a special honor to be asked to host the HBCU Advisory Council’s first-ever meeting on a college campus.“
Tennessee is home to seven HBCUs: American Baptist College, Fisk University, Knoxville College, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Meharry Medical College, and Tennessee State University.

American Baptist College has survived and thrived for 98 years. Established out of a desire to train African American preachers, it now is a full-fledged Historically Black College/University and offers both Associate's and Bachelor's degrees. Nestled on the “Holy” Hill in North Nashville, this College is a treasured institution in teaching, guiding and developing leaders of social change for the 21st century and beyond. Our work places a SEAL (Social Justice, Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership) on the world.
