Monterey: Military, local stakeholders to discuss compatibility use study findings

From Fort Ord to Fort Hunter Liggett, military installations are familiar, and valuable, neighbors on the Central Coast. Every year, they account for thousands of jobs and millions of dollars employed locally, while capitalizing on needed regional resources for their own ventures.

This week, the city of Monterey (MCBC member) hosted virtual planning sessions where attendees could offer input on the ongoing Monterey Regional Compatibility Use Study. Developed in collaboration with a group of local, state and federal partners, the project is an assessment of how military and civilian needs are currently inconsistent and what can be done to fix friction.

The study — dubbed “Strong Communities, Strong Bases” — was prepared under contract with the city of Monterey with financial support from the Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, which provides technical and financial support for areas housing installations. The office prepares local communities to effectively host military operations and infrastructure, especially as defense needs change.

The public has until Nov. 10 to provide comments on the draft study. Documents related to the study, including public meeting materials, fact sheets, draft reports, and maps, are posted on the Resources page of the Monterey Regional CUS website. Read more

America Airlines announces expansion of service from Monterey Regional Airport to Dallas-Fort Worth

As Monterey Regional Airport (MCBC member) continues to increase in popularity amongst local and visiting travelers, American Airlines announces that starting in February it will begin using larger aircraft for its twice-daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth.

“The announcement today of this significant upgrade of aircraft to Dallas-Fort Worth by American Airlines further validates the strength of the Monterey market and our partnership with American Airlines,” said Michael La Pier, the airport’s executive director. “For the first time in nearly three decades, our region will enjoy daily non-stop service on a mainline aircraft which will increase our available seats by nearly 40,000 per year in the Dallas-Fort Worth market.”

The route was previously flown using a 76-seat Embraer 175 aircraft. The A319 nearly doubles the number of available seats each day, with 128 total seats, and offers three classes, with eight First Class seats, 24 in Main Cabin Extra, and 96 in the Main Cabin. Read more

CTEC partners with Meta to support White House initiative to combat violent extremism

Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey's (MCBC member) Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC) will be engaging in groundbreaking research to help communities combat violent extremism in partnership with Meta and the White House’s #UnitedWeStand initiative.

Jason Blazakis, director of CTEC, said the partnership allows the initiative to counter hatred in a holistic way. 

“The White House is bringing together academia, think tanks, and tech companies to take on the hate that seeks to divide us,” Blazakis said. “Every day, CTEC’s analysts witness firsthand the toll hatred takes on our communities. We don’t just research and study the problem—CTEC is about finding solutions. Working with Meta, we’ll do just that.”

The partnership, announced at the White House summit on September 15, drew international media attention including stories in the Washington Post, Reuters, the Guardian, and the Hill. Read more
